Chapter 3 - The Empty Vault

My hands trembled with sheer fury as I read the fraudulent medical documents.
Brandon and Amber hadn't just set me up with the DEA, they had stolen my entire life's work.
I looked at Harrison, demanding to know how he could let a thirty-year-old empty my accounts without calling me first.
The bank manager looked down at his shoes in deep shame.
Harrison confessed that Amber's brother had threatened his family if he didn't expedite the wire transfers immediately.
They had wired all fifty million dollars to a private shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands.
I realized I was standing in the middle of a massive, highly coordinated criminal conspiracy.
I didn't have a house, I didn't have any money, and there was likely a federal warrant out for my arrest.
I left the bank through the rear exit to avoid any police cruisers that might be searching for my car.
I walked three miles in the freezing rain to a cheap motel on the outskirts of the city.
I paid for a room in cash using the emergency hundred-dollar bills I always kept in my money clip.
Sitting on the edge of the lumpy mattress, I realized I had to fight dirty.
I pulled out a burner phone I kept for dealing with difficult overseas suppliers.
I called an old friend named Elias, a retired private investigator who owed me his life.
Ten years ago, I paid for Elias's daughter to have experimental cancer surgery when his insurance abandoned him.
Elias answered on the first ring, his voice gravelly and sharp.
I told him I needed him to hack into the Cayman Islands registry and find exactly who controlled that shell company.
Elias told me to give him exactly one hour to work his magic.
I paced the dirty motel room, plotting how to completely destroy my own son.
Sixty minutes later, Elias called me back with a tone of pure shock in his voice.
"Franklin, I tracked the Cayman account, but it doesn't belong to Brandon or Amber," Elias reported.
I stopped pacing and held my breath.
"The shell corporation is registered to a man named Marcus," Elias revealed.
My blood ran completely cold.
Marcus was the ruthless real estate developer I had just sold the River Oaks mansion to this morning.
Brandon hadn't stolen my money at all.
Marcus had used the house sale as a distraction to intercept my bank routing numbers and steal everything.

Before I could even process this massive betrayal, the heavy wooden door of my motel room exploded inward.
Four men in tactical gear stepped into the room, aiming suppressed weapons directly at my chest.
