Chapter 10 - The Ghost in the File

Every eye and every rolling television camera in the lobby of The Moretti Reserve zoomed in on Deputy Mayor Richard Sterling’s right coat pocket as Sophie’s words echoed off the marble walls.

Before Sterling could slide his hand into his jacket to ditch the evidence, the commander of NYPD Internal Affairs stepped onto the podium, grabbed Sterling’s wrist, and pulled a heavy twenty-four-karat gold butane lighter shaped like a coiled dragon straight out of his pocket—its base deeply engraved with the personal initials of the dead arsonist Arthur Pendelton and reeking of chemical thermite igniter fluid!

In the exact same pocket sat the encrypted master burner phone that had transmitted the forty-three-second detonation code to the Pier Ninety coal terminal thirty minutes earlier!

Broken and terrified of facing a triple murder indictment alone, Caleb Ross dropped to his knees on the marble floor in front of the press cameras and confessed everything at the top of his lungs—admitting that Deputy Mayor Sterling had ordered the thermite fires that killed Dante’s wife three years ago and my husband Marcus two years ago so the Harbor Cartel could blackmail their way into the Brooklyn piers!

As Internal Affairs detectives snapped steel handcuffs around a disgraced, weeping Richard Sterling and dragged both him and Caleb Ross out through the revolving glass doors into a sea of flashing police lights, the entire hotel staff and the stunned guests in the lobby erupted into thunderous applause.

Right there at the foot of the grand staircase, Dante Moretti knelt on one knee in front of Sophie once again, took the crumpled yellow paper from her hand with a genuine, warm smile, and then stood up to look directly into my eyes.

"Your husband died saving my people and exposing the men who destroyed my family, Marissa, and your daughter just saved my life and everything I built," Dante said softly enough that only I could hear over the cheering crowd.

"Effective immediately, you are no longer working behind the night service bar—you are the new Director of Executive Guest Relations at a salary of two hundred and fifty thousand dollars a year, the twelfth-floor penthouse is being rebuilt as a permanent secure residence for you and Sophie, and every penny of your late husband’s five-hundred-thousand-dollar hero pension has just been wired into Sophie’s trust account," Dante declared.

For the first time in two agonizing years, as I stood in the warm golden light of the lobby with my debt erased, my husband’s killers in chains, and my little girl giggling happily as Dante lifted her onto his shoulder, I truly believed that the nightmare was over and we were finally safe.

That night at ten o’clock, while Sophie slept peacefully under a cashmere blanket on the leather sofa inside Dante’s mezzanine office and Dante was downstairs signing the final arrest depositions with the Police Commissioner, I walked over to the mahogany credenza to pour myself a glass of water.

When Vincent Russo had moved the heavy marble desk earlier to sweep for bugs, a hidden bottom drawer in Dante’s private credenza had popped open by half an inch, revealing a thick black folder labeled in Dante’s own handwriting: "DECEMBER 14 — CENA D’ORO UNREDACTED."

Curious to see the final tribute to my brave husband, I pulled the folder open beneath the desk lamp—and the glass of water slipped from my frozen fingers and shattered silently against the Persian rug.

Stapled inside Dante’s personal secret file was a certified Cayman Islands wire receipt showing that Dante Moretti himself had paid my husband Marcus Lane five hundred thousand dollars forty-eight hours before the restaurant fire, alongside a forensic dental report proving the burned body buried in Marcus’s grave belonged to an unidentified cartel courier.

And clipped to the back of the folder was a high-resolution security photograph taken at Pier Eighty-Four just four hours ago—showing my husband Marcus Lane alive and unscathed, wearing a long gray wool coat with a fake latex burn scar peeling off his wrist as he shook hands with Vincent Russo in the rain before climbing into the back of Dante’s own waiting limousine!
