Chapter 8 - The Flash Drive

I ran all the way back to Zoe’s penthouse, my lungs burning from the icy air.
Zoe was waiting by the door, pacing frantically.
"What happened?" Zoe asked, locking the deadbolt behind me.
I didn't answer.
I pulled the metal flash drive from my pocket and walked straight to the laptop sitting on the kitchen island.
I plugged the drive into the USB port.
A folder popped up on the screen immediately.
Inside were two files.
The first file was a video document named 'Original_Dining_Room.mp4'.
I clicked play.
It was the unedited, raw footage of the Thanksgiving dinner.
It clearly showed Megan slapping Lily across the face, and it showed me defending my child exactly as it happened.
No knives. No insanity. Just a mother protecting her daughter from an abusive family.
"We have them," Zoe gasped, covering her mouth.
"This proves the other video is a fake."
But I was already clicking on the second file in the folder.
It was a massive PDF document labeled 'Lily_Rose_Trust.pdf'.
I opened the document and began reading the complex legal jargon.
My heart stopped completely.
"Zoe, look at this," I whispered, pointing to a specific clause on the second page.
The document was the establishing paperwork for a blind trust fund.
The sole beneficiary of the trust was my daughter, Lily.
The amount in the trust was not two million dollars.
It was over five hundred million dollars.
"Half a billion dollars?" Zoe breathed, leaning close to the screen.
"Who set this up?"
I scrolled frantically to the bottom of the final page to find the signature of the benefactor.
The signature was heavily redacted with thick black ink.
But the terms of the trust were horrifyingly clear.
The trust would fully unlock and transfer entirely to Lily’s legal guardian the moment Lily turned six years old.
Lily’s sixth birthday was exactly one month away.
"Mark isn't selling her to a medical facility," I realized, the true, sickening depth of his plot finally clicking into place.
"The bone marrow story was a lie Megan told to cover their tracks."
Zoe looked at me, completely confused.
"They need full, sole custody of Lily before her birthday," I explained, my voice shaking with pure rage.
"If they lock me in an asylum, Mark gets the child, and he gets control of half a billion dollars."
But there was one final email attached at the very bottom of the document.
It was from a private genetics lab, addressed to Mark.
I read the short, clinical message out loud.
"Mr. Peterson, the DNA results confirm your suspicion. You have zero biological relation to the child, Lily."
May you like
Mark had known for five years that he was not Lily’s real father.
And he had stayed just to steal her inheritance.
