Chapter 3 - The Secret Visit

Three days later, there was a knock at my door. I expected a process server or a furious lawyer, but when I opened it, I found Sarah standing there, looking exhausted. She wasn't wearing her usual designer clothes; she was in simple jeans and a sweater.

"I need your help," she whispered.

I didn't invite her in, but I stepped onto the porch. "Help with what, Sarah? Did Brian finally run out of people to manipulate?"

She burst into tears. "He left. When the bank started seizing the assets, he just… packed a bag and drove off. He took the last of the cash. I don't have money for groceries, Claire. The kids need help."

My heart ached for my niece and nephew. I wasn't going to punish them for their father’s sins. "I’ll help them, Sarah. Not you. I’ll set up a trust for the kids’ education and food, but you need to find a job. The coddling stops today."
