Chapter 4 - The Press Conference

The pressure mounted. Thomas Vance arranged a massive press conference on the steps of City Hall, surrounded by paid lobbyists and a few bought-off councilmen. He intended to publicly demand Clara’s resignation for "stifling economic growth."
The plaza was packed with reporters, news vans, and hundreds of citizens.
Thomas stepped up to the microphones, wearing a bespoke suit, looking every inch the aggrieved billionaire.
“Mayor Hayes is running a dictatorship!” Thomas announced to the flashing cameras. “She is deliberately targeting honest, hardworking developers like my family! We must demand transparency about her vendettas!”
The doors of City Hall swung open.
Clara walked out, flanked by the Chief of Police and her legal team. The crowd parted. She didn't look angry; she looked utterly invincible. She walked directly up to the podium and adjusted the microphone.
“Mr. Vance is demanding transparency,” Clara’s voice echoed across the plaza. “And I completely agree. Let’s be transparent.”
She held up a stack of documents.
“For the past week, Mr. Vance’s PR team has questioned my background. They want to know why I am so committed to protecting the vulnerable citizens of Oakhaven. The answer is simple.”
Clara looked directly at Thomas. He suddenly looked very small.
“Twenty-two years ago, I was locked out of my home in a freezing rainstorm because I failed a private school entrance exam due to undiagnosed dyslexia. My biological parents threw me away like garbage because I wasn't perfect enough for their country club.”
The crowd went dead silent. The reporters stopped writing.
“The people who threw me into the streets were Thomas and Eleanor Vance,” Clara stated clearly.

A collective gasp echoed across the plaza. Camera shutters fired like machine guns.
“So yes, Mr. Vance,” Clara continued, her voice ringing like a bell. “I do have a vendetta. My vendetta is against bullies, frauds, and cowards who think wealth excuses cruelty. Your permits are denied. Have a wonderful afternoon.”
