Chapter 6 - The Secret Box

Marcus used his legal connections to get a warrant for the safety deposit box the very next morning. I insisted on being there when the FBI opened it.
Inside the metal box were three fake passports, bundles of hundred-dollar bills totaling nearly $150,000, and a small stack of letters.
But it was the letters that stopped the breath in my lungs.
They were addressed to my father, dated nearly three decades ago, from a woman named Maria. I read the first one, my hands shaking.
Richard, you have to tell Susan. I can't keep raising this baby alone in secret. You promised me if I gave her up to you and Susan, you would provide for her. But you treat her like an outsider. She is your daughter, Richard. She is my daughter.
I dropped the paper.
Susan wasn't my biological mother. My father had an affair. To save his marriage and avoid public disgrace, they had taken me in, pretending I was Susan's child. That was the dark secret they had buried for thirty years. That was why they always favored Chloe. That was why they never loved me. I was the living, breathing evidence of his infidelity, a burden they only tolerated.
And my grandfather—my father’s dad—knew. That’s why he left the massive trust fund entirely to me, bypassing my father completely. He knew they would mistreat me.

Suddenly, every cold stare, every missed birthday, every time I was pushed aside for Chloe made terrifying, heartbreaking sense.
I walked out of the bank vault and threw up in the alleyway. I cried until I had nothing left. Not for them, but for the little girl who had spent her whole life trying to earn the love of a woman who despised her existence.
