Chapter 3 - The Stolen Policy

I gripped the empty coffee mug tightly, forcing my heart rate to remain steady.
"The lock has been sticking lately, I think the humidity is warping the wood," I lied without missing a beat.
Maris stared at me for a long, uncomfortable moment before her expression finally softened into a fake pout.
"You drank your coffee so fast," she noted, looking at the empty ceramic mug in my hand.
I smiled and told her it was exactly what I needed to wake up for my long night shift.
I kissed her cheek, grabbed my medical bag, and told her I would see her in the morning.
Instead of driving to the hospital, I parked my car three blocks away in a dark, empty alley.
I could not leave Lumi entirely alone with that monster, but I needed absolute proof to destroy her.
I waited until the lights in our master bedroom finally clicked off at midnight.
I crept silently through the backdoor, using the spare key I had hidden under the porch planter.
The house was suffocatingly quiet as I slipped into Maris's private home office.
She had left her laptop running, perfectly illuminated in the dark room.
I bypassed her simple password because she foolishly used the date of our wedding as her security code.
I dug through her encrypted files, frantically searching for the financial motive behind my impending murder.
I found a massive life insurance policy taken out in my name just two days after our courthouse wedding.
The policy was worth over three million dollars in the event of an accidental or sudden medical death.
But the primary beneficiary listed on the official document was not Maris.
I stared at the screen in absolute, horrified disbelief as I read the name.
The money was slated to go directly to Dr. Arthur Vance.

He was the Chief of Surgery at my hospital and the man who had originally introduced me to Maris.
I heard the hardwood floor creak loudly right behind my chair.
