Chapter 10 - The False Victory

The document I held in my trembling hands was a highly official, notarized legal contract.

It was a complete transfer of sole physical and legal custody of baby Emiliano directly to Adrian.

The signature at the bottom of the page, acting as the legally binding witness to the fraudulent transfer, belonged to Sarah.

The horrifying truth completely crashed over me like a devastating wave of freezing water.

Sarah had not driven across the state line in the middle of the night to save her terrified sister.

She had actively sold her own flesh and blood out for whatever massive amount of money Adrian had promised her.

"Lucy, get out of the car," I screamed, completely abandoning my polite demeanor and lunging toward the steering wheel.

Before my hands could even touch the leather wheel, Sarah aggressively hit the master electronic lock button on the console.

The heavy steel child-safety locks engaged with a loud, definitive click, completely trapping Lucy in the back seat.

Sarah aggressively slammed on the brakes, pulling the massive SUV onto the desolate, dirt shoulder of the dark highway.

She quickly pulled the keys out of the ignition and turned to look at me with completely cold, dead eyes.

"He offered me two million dollars, Mrs. Carmen," Sarah stated smoothly, showing absolutely no remorse.

"You really should have just stayed in your apartment and minded your own miserable business."

Lucy began screaming hysterically, violently beating her fists against the reinforced, unyielding glass of the back windows.

I raised my cane to aggressively smash the windshield, desperately hoping to create an escape route.

But my desperate action was completely halted by the terrifying sight outside the vehicle.

Because the man stepping out of the dark trees was not a highway patrol officer.

He was Adrian.

He walked slowly toward the locked car with a terrifying, victorious smile spreading across his face.

And Sarah reached over to unlock the back door for him.
