Chapter 10 - The Stars Align

Don Carmine froze, slowly turning around to face the barrel of Vincent's gun.
"What is the meaning of this, Vincent?" the Don asked, his voice dripping with deadly warning.
Vincent kept the weapon perfectly steady, aiming right at the older man's chest.
"The ledger proved David stole the money, but the routing codes required a Commission-level authorization," Vincent explained coldly.
"You knew about the theft all along, Carmine, and you were going to let me take the fall to cover your own tracks."
The elite enforcers in the room slowly drew their weapons, but they did not aim at Vincent.
They aimed them directly at Don Carmine.
Vincent had secretly sent the decrypted ledger data to the other national bosses while we were hiding in the bunker.
Carmine had been officially outvoted and stripped of his power by the ruling families an hour ago.
The enforcers quietly escorted the disgraced Don out of the warehouse to face the absolute justice of the Commission.
Vincent lowered his gun and finally let out a long, exhausted breath.
One week later, the doors of Sterling's Bistro opened under entirely new management.
David had been forced to sign the deed over to my mother before he mysteriously disappeared from Chicago forever.
Vincent Kane sat in his usual corner booth, quietly sipping a glass of expensive crystal water.
My mother walked over, beaming with absolute pride, and handed him a plate of his favorite meal on the house.
I sat at the table next to him, happily coloring a brand new picture of a blue Porsche.
We were finally safe, completely free from debt, and protected by the most powerful man in the city.
That afternoon, a beautifully wrapped package arrived at the restaurant addressed specifically to me.
I eagerly tore open the paper to find a silver locket that I recognized instantly.
It was my father's locket, the exact one he supposedly wore on the day he died.

Tucked inside the velvet box was a handwritten note that made my blood run completely cold.
It simply read: "You have grown so much, Rory, and I am finally coming to take you back."
