Chapter 2 - The Stolen Child

I stared at Colonel Carter as the ambulance hit a pothole, rattling my aching bones.
I told him Daniel was just a corporate accountant for a mid-level logistics firm.
Carter shook his head, explaining that this specific toxin cost thousands of dollars per drop on the black market.
He promised to protect me, ordering the paramedics to take us to a private military hospital instead of the local emergency room.
I was wheeled into a secure, sterile room where doctors immediately flushed the remaining poison from my bloodstream.
I slept for a few hours, waking up to the soft beeping of a heart monitor and the smell of antiseptic.
Carter was sitting in a chair by the window, reading a heavily redacted file on his tablet.
I sat up slowly, feeling the strength finally returning to my exhausted muscles.
I told him I needed to leave immediately to pick up my seven-year-old daughter, Lily, from school.
Before Carter could answer, the door to my hospital room was violently kicked open.
Two armed local police officers marched into the room, their hands resting on their duty belts.
Daniel followed closely behind them, wearing a perfectly tailored suit and a triumphant smile.
Patricia trailed in last, holding my daughter Lily tightly by the wrist.
Lily saw me and immediately started crying, trying to pull away from her grandmother.
I ripped the IV from my arm and tried to run to her, but the officers blocked my path.
Carter stepped between me and the police, demanding to know who authorized their entry into a military facility.
Daniel held up a legal document stamped with Judge Hanley's official seal.
He smugly announced that the judge had granted him full, immediate emergency custody of Lily.
He claimed my sudden collapse proved I was entirely medically and mentally unfit to care for a child.
I screamed that he had poisoned me, begging the officers to arrest him.
One of the officers coldly told me that my toxicology report from the local lab had come back completely clean.
I looked at Carter in absolute shock, knowing he had drawn my blood in the ambulance.
Carter’s face hardened as he realized Daniel’s reach extended into the local medical labs.
Patricia bent down and whispered something into Lily's ear that made my daughter tremble.
Daniel told me I would never see my child again, turning around to walk out the door.
I fought against the officers, screaming Lily's name as they dragged her down the hospital corridor.
Carter grabbed my shoulders, forcing me to stop struggling before I got arrested.
He promised me we were going to get her back by any means necessary.

He pulled out his encrypted phone and showed me a surveillance photo of Daniel from ten years ago.
The man in the photo looked exactly like my husband, but he was wearing the uniform of a foreign mercenary death squad.
