Chapter 9 - The Ashes

The concussive force of the explosion shattered every remaining window in the cabin.
A massive shockwave ripped through the kitchen, throwing debris in all directions.
The heavy oak dining table shuddered violently above us but miraculously held together.
I kept my eyes squeezed shut and pressed my hands firmly over Lily's ears.
A wave of blistering heat washed over the floorboards.
When the roaring sound finally subsided, an eerie silence settled over the ruins.
I cautiously opened my eyes and peeked out from under the table.
The explosion had completely blown out the entire back wall of the kitchen.
The padlocked door and the iron bars were gone, replaced by a massive, smoking crater.
Cool night air rushed into the room, clearing out the suffocating black smoke.
Aaron was lying on his back near the shattered wall, covered in ash and bleeding from his cheek.
I crawled out from under the table and pulled Lily tightly against my chest.
We rushed over to Aaron and helped him sit up.
He coughed a cloud of dust and offered a weak, painful smile.
That was closer than I would have liked.
I looked back into the roaring inferno of the living room.
The ceiling had finally caved in, crushing everything beneath a pile of burning timber.
Daniel was nowhere to be seen in the blazing wreckage.
We cannot stay here to look for him.
We scrambled over the burning debris and escaped into the cool safety of the forest.
The distant wail of police sirens finally echoed through the mountain valley.
Red and blue lights flashed through the trees as a convoy of emergency vehicles arrived.
Paramedics rushed forward with blankets and oxygen masks.
They gently took Lily from my arms and began checking her vitals.
I collapsed onto the tailgate of an ambulance, completely exhausted.
Aaron sat next to me while a medic wrapped a splint around his broken arm.
A police officer approached us with a solemn expression on his face.
We found a body in the ashes near the kitchen threshold.
Based on the severity of the burns, we will need dental records to confirm the identity.
I let out a long, trembling breath as the nightmare finally seemed to end.
Daniel could never hurt us again.
I wrapped my arms around Lily and cried tears of absolute relief.
The paramedic cleaning my wounds suddenly paused and frowned at my arm.
Ma'am, there is a strange puncture mark on your shoulder.
I looked down and saw a tiny, fresh needle mark near my collarbone.
May you like
I had not noticed it during the chaos of the fight.
Before I could respond, my vision instantly went black.
