Chapter 6 - The Extraction

The black SUVs were moving fast, their tires tearing through the puddles on the quiet suburban street.

I recognized the tactical formation instantly; it was a standard military extraction sweep, not a polite FBI visit.

My father’s clean-up crew had arrived.

I grabbed Nathan by the collar of his wet jacket and violently yanked him inside the townhouse.

I slammed the heavy front door shut and threw the steel deadbolt just as the vehicles screeched to a halt in my driveway.

“Get down and stay completely quiet,” I hissed, shoving Nathan roughly toward the living room floor.

He scrambled behind the heavy leather sofa, clutching the digital drive to his chest like a lifeline.

I quickly checked the chamber of my service pistol and moved silently toward the digital security panel on the wall.

I triggered the emergency lockdown protocol I had personally installed when we bought the house.

Heavy steel shutters slammed down over the ground-floor windows, completely plunging the room into darkness.

The immediate sound of heavy boots hitting my front porch confirmed my worst fears.

“Claire, this is Major Hayes,” a familiar, commanding voice called out through the thick wood of the door.

Hayes was my father’s most trusted operative, a man who specialized in making massive problems quietly disappear.

“Your father sent me to check on your security,” Hayes lied smoothly.

“We have reason to believe Nathan Whitmore is highly unstable and may attempt to breach your property.”

“Please open the door so we can clear the premises.”

I stood perfectly still in the dark, my heart pounding a steady, tactical rhythm.

“I am perfectly secure, Major,” I called back, keeping my voice utterly devoid of panic.

“Nathan is not here, and my security systems are fully operational.”

“You are dismissed.”

A heavy, terrifying silence stretched across the porch.

“Claire, you know I cannot leave until I visually confirm the asset is not in your possession,” Hayes replied, his tone dropping the polite facade.

“If you do not open the door, I will be forced to breach the perimeter.”

They weren't here to check on me.

They were here to execute Nathan and recover the ledger, regardless of who stood in their way.

I looked at Nathan, who was trembling violently in the shadows.

If Hayes breached the door, a firefight was inevitable, and my daughter was sleeping in the nursery directly above us.

I needed to get them out of the house, and I needed to do it immediately.

I crept over to Nathan and hauled him to his feet.

“Follow me, and if you make a single sound, I will shoot you myself,” I whispered.

I led him quickly through the dark kitchen and opened the reinforced door leading into the attached garage.

My tactical vehicle, a heavily modified black SUV, sat waiting in the dark.

I shoved Nathan into the passenger seat and sprinted to the corner of the garage to grab Lily’s emergency go-bag.

I quietly ran up the back stairs to the nursery, gently scooped my sleeping daughter out of her crib, and secured her in the portable carrier.

As I descended the stairs, the terrifying sound of a heavy breaching ram smashing against my front door echoed through the house.

The wood splintered violently under the massive impact.

I strapped Lily into the backseat of the vehicle and jumped into the driver's seat.

“Hold on,” I ordered Nathan.

I hit the garage door opener, the metal rolling up to reveal the chaotic scene outside.

Hayes and three armed operatives were stacked by my ruined front door, completely focused on the breach.

I slammed my foot on the accelerator, the powerful engine roaring to life.

The heavy SUV launched out of the garage, tearing across the wet lawn and smashing directly through my own wooden fence.

The operatives spun around, raising their weapons, but I was already moving too fast.

I merged onto the main road, the tires screeching loudly as I took the corner at dangerous speeds.

I looked in the rearview mirror and saw Hayes sprinting toward his vehicle to give chase.

We had exactly a two-minute head start.

I navigated the wet, winding roads of the Virginia suburbs, heading toward the only place my father wouldn't expect me to go.

“Where are we going?” Nathan gasped, gripping the dashboard until his knuckles turned white.

“To the one man who actually has the jurisdiction to arrest a General,” I replied coldly.

I reached for my secure phone and dialed a number I hadn't used in three years.

The line rang twice before a sharp, authoritative voice answered.

“Director Vance,” the man said.

“Sir, this is Lieutenant Colonel Donovan,” I stated firmly.

“I need immediate tactical sanctuary at the CIA safe house in Langley, and I am bringing you the physical ledger for the black-ops slush fund.”

The Director paused, the sheer weight of my statement hanging in the air.

“You are declaring war on your own father, Claire.”

“No, sir,” I replied, checking my mirror as headlights suddenly appeared behind me.

“My father declared war on me when he used my family as collateral.”

“And I am about to burn his entire empire to the ground.”
