Chapter 1 - The First Notice

The first line began with the words, "Notice of Immediate Eviction and Asset Seizure."
My lawyer had drafted it months ago as a contingency plan, but I never thought I would actually send it.
Now, it was sitting in the inboxes of everyone at that dining table.
I held Emma tightly against my chest as the elevator doors closed, shutting out the faint sound of Daniel shouting my name from the hallway.
My daughter was still shivering, her small hands clutching the lapels of my wrinkled blazer.
I wrapped her in my scarf and promised her we were going somewhere warm.
By the time I buckled her into her car seat, my phone was lighting up with a barrage of texts from my mother-in-law.
Olivia’s messages quickly shifted from arrogant demands to panicked questions about why her credit card had just been declined at the online luxury boutique.
I tossed the phone into the passenger seat and drove us to a high-end hotel downtown.
The concierge recognized me from my company’s corporate events and immediately upgraded us to a secure penthouse suite.
Once we were inside, I ordered room service, making sure Emma got the biggest bowl of warm macaroni and cheese the kitchen could make.
Watching her finally eat something other than stale bread brought tears to my eyes, but I refused to let them fall.
I opened my laptop to check the joint accounts and watched in real-time as Daniel desperately tried to transfer funds to his personal checking.
Every single attempt was met with a bold red error message stating the account was frozen pending legal review.
I poured myself a glass of water and finally allowed myself to breathe.
I had built my wealth from the ground up, and I was about to systematically dismantle the comfortable life they had stolen from me.
My phone rang again, but this time it was not Daniel or Olivia.
It was my lawyer, Marcus, calling much later than his usual office hours.
I picked up the call, expecting him to confirm the delivery of the legal notices.
Instead, his voice sounded uncharacteristically tense.
"Sarah, I need you to listen to me very carefully and stay exactly where you are," Marcus said.
I stood up, my heart rate spiking as I looked over at Emma sleeping peacefully on the oversized hotel bed.
"What's wrong, Marcus?" I asked.
"Daniel didn't just call a lawyer," Marcus replied, taking a sharp breath.

"He called the police, and he reported that you kidnapped his daughter."
A loud, aggressive knock suddenly hammered against my hotel room door.
