Chapter 10 - The Final Translation

I stared down the barrel of the suppressed pistol, feeling a strange, icy calm wash over my entire body.
Richard Halston, the man who had promised to love and protect me thirty-one years ago, was entirely prepared to murder me in our living room.
"You really think you can shoot me and just walk out the front door?" I asked, keeping my voice perfectly level.
"The police were just here, Richard."
"They will be back to process the scene."
Richard sneered, his hand steady on the weapon.
"I am a dead man, Margaret."
"If they find your body, they will assume Brooke hired an accomplice to finish the job before she was arrested."
"It is the perfect crime."
He took a step closer, his finger tightening on the trigger.
"Goodbye, Maggie."
Before he could fire, I deliberately spoke in fluent, rapid-fire Korean.
"Now!" I shouted clearly.
Richard frowned, completely confused by the sudden foreign language.
"What did you just say?" he demanded.
Before he could even process the words, the massive glass patio doors behind him shattered inward with a deafening crash.
Two heavily armed men in dark tactical gear burst into the living room, completely ignoring the broken glass.
They weren't Boston police officers.
They were private security contractors.
One of the men lunged forward, tackling Richard violently to the hardwood floor.
The suppressed pistol fired wildly into the ceiling as Richard was brutally pinned down.
The second contractor secured Richard's arms behind his back with heavy plastic zip-ties, completely neutralizing the threat in less than ten seconds.
I stood perfectly still, my heart racing as I watched my husband restrained like a common criminal on our expensive rug.
A tall, elegant figure stepped carefully through the shattered patio doors.
It was Grace Han.
She looked impeccably dressed in a dark winter coat, her expression a mask of cold, terrifying authority.
"Your Korean is impeccable, Margaret," Grace said smoothly, stepping over the glass.
I offered a small, respectful bow.
"Thank you, Grace."
"I appreciate your timely arrival."
Richard struggled wildly against his restraints, spitting blood onto the floor.
"What the hell is this?" Richard screamed, looking frantically between Grace and me.
"You set me up!"
Grace walked over and casually picked up the metallic flash drive Richard had dropped during the struggle.
"You stole eighty million dollars from my family, Richard," Grace stated coldly, slipping the drive into her pocket.
"Did you honestly believe my husband and I wouldn't track every single penny of it?"
She looked down at him with absolute contempt.
"We knew you faked your death the moment the offshore accounts pinged."
"My security team has been watching this house for three hours, waiting for you to walk into the trap."
I walked over and stood right next to Grace, looking down at the broken man who had underestimated me for decades.
"You thought I was just a piece of furniture, Richard," I said softly, using the exact English translation of his insult from the restaurant.
"You forgot that I have spent my entire life listening to powerful people talk when they thought no one was paying attention."
I looked at Grace and nodded.
"Take him away," I told her.
The contractors hauled Richard to his feet, ignoring his furious, desperate screaming.
They dragged him out the back door, destined for a private, off-the-books interrogation far away from American legal jurisdiction.
I stood alone in my beautiful, shattered house, finally free of the monster I had married.
The portfolio was secured for my daughter, the stolen money was recovered, and Richard was gone forever.
I poured myself a fresh glass of wine and walked toward the kitchen to call the window repair company.
As I picked up my phone, a new email notification popped up on the screen.
It was from my private investigator, Marcus Thorne.
Margaret, I intercepted a massive wire transfer from the blind trust. Someone just completely emptied your daughter's account.
I froze, the wine glass slipping from my trembling fingers.
The attached security photo showed the person who authorized the transfer at a bank in Switzerland just ten minutes ago.
It wasn't Richard.
May you like
It wasn't Daniel Han.
It was my own daughter, Emily, standing next to a man I had never seen before in my life.
