Chapter 5 - The Showroom Ambush

While paramedics loaded Danny Vance into an ambulance bound for Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Matteo sent Luca straight to Union Station with the brass key to retrieve the backup decryption dongle from Locker Seven-Eleven.

Matteo and I raced directly to the lakefront convention center at McCormick Place, where twelve hundred VIP guests, television cameras, and corporate sponsors were already filling the grand ballroom for the annual Chicago Motorsports Charity Gala.

Tonight was supposed to be a triumphant moment for Matteo’s twenty-four-year-old brother Eli: using a custom-built silver prototype car outfitted with steering-wheel hand controls, Eli was scheduled to drive a ceremonial lap up the indoor stadium ramp at eight o’clock before presenting the youth engineering scholarship.

When Matteo and I hurried into the subterranean prep paddock beneath the ballroom at seven-fifteen, Eli DeSantis was already sitting in his wheelchair beside the gleaming silver prototype car, adjusting his driving gloves while chatting with two volunteer mechanics.

The moment Eli looked up and saw me walking beside his older brother, his warm smile faded into confusion as his eyes dropped to the unmistakable black-diamond DeSantis signet ring gleaming on my left hand.

"Matteo, isn’t this Chase Whitaker’s wife," Eli asked quietly.

"Not anymore, Eli—Vivian is the woman who just saved your life tonight, and she is also the person who brought us the lab proof that Chase Whitaker was the one who cut your brake line at Indianapolis two years ago," Matteo told his brother firmly.

Eli’s knuckles turned white on the rims of his wheelchair as I dropped to my knees beside the silver prototype’s front left wheel well with a high-intensity mechanic’s flashlight.

Because I had spent two years studying every micro-valve assembly used in professional racing hydraulic systems, it took me less than two minutes to spot what the volunteer crew had missed behind the carbon-fiber brake duct.

Screwed inline between the hand-control master cylinder and the front brake caliper was a miniature anodized-black radio-frequency bleed valve designed to dump eighty percent of the brake fluid onto the inner tire wall the instant someone in the ballroom pressed a remote transmitter.

Using a titanium box wrench from the paddock cart, I unbolted the sabotaged radio valve, replaced the line with a solid braided-steel hose, and dropped the remote valve into Matteo’s palm.

Matteo’s jaw clenched so hard I thought the bone might fracture before he reached down, pulled me to my feet, and pressed a fierce kiss to the back of my hand right above his family ring.

"Let Chase and Brielle believe that valve is still attached to the caliper until eight o’clock," Matteo said in a voice that promised total annihilation.

Five minutes later, the twenty-foot glass doors of the upstairs Grand Ballroom swung open, and every conversation among the twelve hundred black-tie guests died instantly as I walked down the marble steps on Matteo DeSantis’s arm wearing a floor-length crimson silk gown and the DeSantis family ring blazing under the chandeliers.

Thirty feet away near the champagne tower stood Chase Whitaker in a white dinner jacket beside Brielle Sutton in a gold sequined dress.

The second Chase saw me on Matteo’s arm wearing Matteo’s ring on my left hand, his face turned a blotchy shade of purple, and in a fit of humiliated rage he marched straight up the steps of the central stage and snatched the live microphone from the podium.

"Ladies and gentlemen, before our exhibition lap begins tonight, I feel obligated as a board member to apologize for the disgraceful woman standing by the entrance," Chase’s voice boomed across the entire hall through the stadium speakers.

"Last night I served my wife Vivian with divorce papers after catching her trading our team’s proprietary secrets in midnight meetings with Matteo DeSantis—and when she begged me on her knees this morning to take her back and pay off the four-million-dollar debt she racked up behind my back, I threw her out for good."

Twenty television cameras swung toward us as Matteo calmly buttoned his tuxedo jacket, led me up the marble steps onto the stage, and took the secondary microphone while holding my left hand high under the spotlights.

"First of all, ladies and gentlemen, Vivian did not beg this coward for anything this morning—she returned to her house with two police officers after Chase struck her in the face twice last night to cover up his four-month affair with his publicist," Matteo announced calmly as the giant eighty-foot LED screen behind the podium lit up with the foyer security video of Chase slapping me and screaming "Look what you made me do."

Gasps of revulsion swept across the ballroom as sponsors and executives backed away from Brielle at the foot of the stage.

"Second," Matteo continued while holding up a stamped legal binder, "at four o’clock this afternoon, DeSantis Capital purchased the four-million-dollar Baron Capital bridge loan that Chase fraudulently guaranteed by forging his wife’s signature—and because Whitaker Motorsports violated its morality clause on that video last night, I have just called the entire loan due on the spot and legally seized one hundred percent of Chase’s race cars, garage leases, and bank accounts, naming my fiancée Vivian as sole Controlling Director."

As Chase stood ruined under the blinding lights and I stepped behind the side velvet stage curtains to signal Eli’s crew, Brielle Sutton suddenly lunged through the drapes behind me in tears and grabbed my arm in sheer terror.

"Vivian, stop Matteo before that silver car rolls up the ramp—my brother works for Viktor Kovacs’s Eastern European gambling syndicate because Chase lost eight million dollars fixing races for them, and Chase didn’t just rig Eli’s brakes tonight," Brielle hissed frantically in my ear.

"An hour ago Kovacs’s men kidnapped your disabled brother Noah’s medical transport van on its way back from Northwestern Hospital, parked it directly above the subterranean blast wall downstairs, and wired ten pounds of C4 under the seat of the autopilot exhibition car rolling onto this stage right now."
