Chapter 8 - The Collapse

Richard didn't fight back. He collapsed to the marble floor, sobbing uncontrollably as federal agents wrenched his arms behind his back and slapped heavy steel cuffs onto his wrists. He looked up at me from the ground, his face pressed against the cold stone, tears mixing with the sweat on his cheeks.
"Catherine! Catherine, please! Help me! Don't let them take me, Volkov has men in prison, they'll kill me!" he shrieked, the reality of his future finally crushing his delusions.
I looked down at him. I felt no pity. I felt no lingering love. He was just a stranger who had tried to destroy me.
"Good luck, Richard," I said softly, delivering the final blow.
I turned on my heel and walked out of the bank. The Florida sun felt warm and inviting against my skin. Agent Reynolds met me by the surveillance van.
"We got him. We also seized the lockbox. It contains enough bearer bonds to cover a fraction of what he owes, but it's evidence. Excellent work, Mrs. Sterling."
"What about Samantha?" I asked, adjusting my sunglasses.
"Interpol picked her up at the airport in Nassau an hour ago," Reynolds replied. "She was trying to board a flight to Mexico using a fake passport. She's being extradited back to New York to face conspiracy and fraud charges."
Both of them. Taken down in less than forty-eight hours.
Evelyn walked up beside me, handing me a freshly printed legal document. "The judge signed the order. Your assets are unfrozen. The house is completely yours, clear of any liens. And I have expedited the divorce filings. Given the federal felony charges and the adultery, the judge will grant it immediately. He gets nothing."
I took the paper, feeling the heavy, satisfying weight of absolute victory. "Thank you, Evelyn. Send me your bill."

"It will be astronomical," she smirked.
"I can afford it," I replied.
