Chapter 4 - The Driveway

I kept running, my expensive work shoes blistering my heels with every step.

Through the open phone line, I heard glass breaking and heavy bodies slamming into walls.

Derek was a trained fighter, but the other man had a firearm.

"Derek, pick up the phone!" I shouted, even though I knew he couldn't hear me.

The scuffle ended with a sickening thud.

For ten agonizing seconds, there was only dead silence.

Then, I heard heavy boots walking toward the phone.

"Derek?" I asked, my voice shaking.

Someone picked up the device.

"Your brother is asleep," a deep, unfamiliar voice said.

"Who are you?" I demanded.

"Where is my son?"

"Your son is currently locked in the upstairs bathroom," the stranger replied calmly.

"And he's going to stay there until Lena gives me back what she took."

"I don't know what you're talking about," I pleaded.

"Lena isn't even there."

"She will be," the man chuckled.

"She owes my boss four hundred thousand dollars in cash, and she's not leaving town without her precious boyfriend."

I finally reached the entrance to my subdivision.

I could see the roof of my house in the distance.

"If you touch my boy, I will kill you," I warned him.

"You can try," the man said.

"But you might want to tell your ex-wife to step out of her car slowly."

My blood ran cold.

"What?" I asked.

May you like

"She just pulled into the driveway," the man said.

He hung up the phone.
