Chapter 1 - The Countdown

Through the narrow crack in the door, the bathroom felt like an alien landscape.
The steam was thick, smelling faintly of lavender baby wash, but beneath it was that sharp, metallic chemical odor I had noticed on the towels. Emma was sitting in the tub, the water coming up to her small, shivering shoulders. Her lips had a faint bluish tint.
David knelt beside the porcelain edge. He wasn't smiling. He wasn't the loving father who joked at the dinner table. His eyes were cold, focused, and entirely clinical. In his left hand, the digital stopwatch ticked away the seconds. In his right, he held a plastic dropper filled with a clear, viscous liquid.
"Forty-five seconds," David whispered, his voice devoid of any warmth. "You dropped your heart rate, Emma, but your breathing is erratic. We need to stabilize. Open."
Emma squeezed her eyes shut. She was shaking. "Daddy, please. It tastes bad. It makes my head fuzzy."
"Open your mouth, Emma," David commanded, the softness of his voice making it infinitely more terrifying. "If you don't take the drop, we have to start the submersion over. You know the rules of the game."
My brain stopped processing logic. Maternal instinct, raw and violent, took over.
I shoved the heavy oak door open with such force that the brass handle punched a hole straight through the drywall.
David whipped his head around, his eyes going wide for a fraction of a second before the charming, easygoing mask slammed back into place. He quickly slipped the plastic dropper into his shirt pocket and clicked the stopwatch off.
"Honey," David said smoothly, standing up. "You startled us. We were just practicing holding our breath for swimming lessons—"
"Get away from her," I screamed, my voice tearing through my throat.
I didn't wait for him to move. I lunged forward, shoving him back with both hands. He stumbled, hitting his shoulders against the tiled wall. I leaned over the tub and grabbed my terrified, shivering daughter, pulling her dripping wet body against my chest. I didn't grab a towel. I didn't care about the water soaking my clothes.
"Mommy!" Emma wailed, burying her wet face into my neck, her tiny fingers digging into my back.
David held his hands up in a placating gesture, stepping forward. "Look what you did, you're scaring her. You're being completely hysterical right now. Put her down and let's talk about this."
"If you take one more step toward us, I will kill you," I hissed, backing out of the bathroom.
I slammed the door in his face and ran down the hallway to the master bedroom. I kicked the door shut, threw the deadbolt, and grabbed my cell phone off the nightstand. My hands were shaking so violently I dropped it twice before I could dial 911.
"911, what is your emergency?" the dispatcher asked.
"My husband," I choked out, wrapping a blanket around Emma as she sobbed on the bed. "He's hurting our daughter. He's doing something to her in the bathroom. Send the police. Please, hurry."

Outside the bedroom door, the knob rattled. Then came David's voice, muffled through the wood, sickeningly calm.
"You're making a massive mistake, sweetheart. Open the door."
