Chapter 1

CHAPTER 1: Activate Protocol 7

The freezing water hit me like a wall.
For a split second, I couldn't breathe.
Dirty water soaked my hair, ran down my face, and drenched the pale blue maternity dress stretched over my seven-month pregnant belly.
The dining room erupted in laughter.
Crystal glasses sparkled beneath the chandelier.
Expensive silverware gleamed.
The wealthy Harrison family sat around the enormous mahogany table watching me drip onto the floor.
Watching me become the evening's entertainment.
""Oops.""
Diane Harrison lowered the empty bucket.
The smile on her face wasn't accidental.
Neither was the water.
""Try to see the positive.""
She raised her wineglass.
""At least you finally took a bath.""
More laughter.
My ex-husband Brendan nearly choked on his drink.
Across from him, Jessica—the woman he'd started dating before our divorce was even finalized—covered her mouth as she giggled.
""Someone should get her a towel.""
She wrinkled her nose dramatically.
""We don't want that smell on the linen.""
The room exploded again.
Everyone laughed.
Everyone except me.
I sat perfectly still.
Water dripped from my eyelashes.
My hands.
My dress.
The Persian rug beneath my chair.
Ironically, it was the same rug I had personally approved during the corporate headquarters renovation three years earlier.
Not that anyone at the table knew that.
To them, I was Emily Carter.
The unwanted ex-wife.
The pregnant burden.
The poor woman who somehow got lucky enough to marry into wealth.
Then unlucky enough to lose it.
At least, that's what they believed.
The truth was very different.
I wasn't poor.
I wasn't dependent.
And I certainly wasn't powerless.
In reality, every person seated around that table worked for me.
None of them knew it.
Not Brendan.
Not Diane.
Not Jessica.
Not even the executives seated farther down the table.
Because my grandfather had taught me a valuable lesson years ago.
""Never reveal your position until people show you who they really are.""
So I hadn't.
When Grandfather retired, he quietly transferred majority ownership of Harrison Global Holdings into a private trust.
A trust controlled entirely by me.
The public face of the company remained the board.
The executive team.
The Harrison name.
Nobody outside a tiny legal circle knew who actually owned fifty-one percent of the corporation.
That secrecy had protected the company.
Protected me.
And tonight...
It was about to destroy several careers.
I slowly reached into my handbag.
The room continued laughing.
No one noticed.
No one cared.
Brendan leaned back in his chair.
""Come on, Emily.""
His grin widened.
""Don't look so upset.""
I looked directly at him.
The man who had once promised to love me forever.
The man who cheated while I was pregnant.
The man who told everyone I was lucky he tolerated me.
The man who had no idea whose signature ultimately approved his annual bonus.
Something inside me became completely calm.
Not angry.
Not hurt.
Calm.
The kind of calm that appears right before a storm.
I unlocked my phone.
Opened a secure messaging application.
Typed three words.
Activate Protocol 7.
Then pressed send.
That was it.
No explanation.
No instructions.
None were necessary.
The response appeared ten seconds later.
Confirmed. Execution begins immediately.
I slipped the phone back into my purse.
Jessica laughed again.
""Look at her.""
Brendan smirked.
""Probably texting her lawyer.""
Diane rolled her eyes.
""With what money?""
The table laughed.
Again.
I simply smiled.
And for the first time that evening, the laughter began to fade.
Because something about my smile felt wrong.
Not embarrassed.
Not defeated.
Confident.
Diane noticed first.
Her smile faltered.
""What are you smiling about?""
I picked up my napkin.
Carefully dried my hands.
Then looked around the room.
Memorizing every face.
Every laugh.
Every smirk.
Every person who had enjoyed humiliating a pregnant woman.
""You'll find out soon.""
Silence.
A strange silence.
Brendan frowned.
""What does that mean?""
I checked the time.
8:42 p.m.
""About eight minutes.""
The room exchanged confused looks.
Jessica laughed nervously.
""What is that supposed to mean?""
I didn't answer.
Because at that exact moment, hundreds of miles away, a series of encrypted instructions were already moving through corporate servers.
Board members were receiving emergency notifications.
Legal departments were activating dormant authorization codes.
Internal auditors were opening sealed investigations.
And one very specific file—locked for years—had just been released.
The file was named:
Protocol 7.
The protocol reserved for a single circumstance.
A majority shareholder determining that executive leadership had become a liability to the corporation.
No one had ever activated it.
Until tonight.
My phone vibrated.
Once.
Then again.
Then again.
Three confirmations.
Everything was proceeding exactly as planned.
Brendan noticed.
His confidence wavered.
""What did you do?""
I looked at him.
Then at Diane.
Then at Jessica.
And finally smiled.
The same calm smile.
The same terrifying smile.
""Nothing yet.""
The grandfather clock in the hallway chimed.
8:45 p.m.
And at that exact moment, every executive phone in the room began ringing simultaneously.
One after another.
Like dominoes falling.
May you like
No one was laughing anymore.
And the nightmare for the Harrison family had just begun.
