Chapter 2 - The Brunch of Hubris

Sunday morning arrived with the crisp, cold clarity of a winter sun. In the Vances' lavish hotel suite, Beatrice Vance was in high spirits. She wore a silk robe, sipping mimosas as she reviewed the seating chart for the post-wedding brunch.
"Julian," she called out, not looking at her son. "Did you manage to get her to sign the papers?"
Julian, who was staring at his reflection in the mirror, adjusting his tie with shaking hands, hesitated. "She... she was being difficult, Mother. She wouldn't listen."
Beatrice laughed, a sharp, glassy sound. "She’ll listen once she realizes she’s isolated. We’ll announce the transfer of property at brunch today. It’s a 'gift' to the family corporation. By the time she realizes what happened, it will be legally binding."
She adjusted her pearls. "She’s a broken, fragile thing. She won't dare speak against us."
They had no idea.
While they dressed for brunch, their world was dissolving. Their primary bank accounts had triggered "suspicious activity" alerts that locked their access. The investment firm Julian worked for—which was actually a client of Victor’s—had received an anonymous, devastating dossier outlining Julian’s embezzlement of company funds to cover his mother’s gambling debts.
At 10:00 AM, the Vances walked into the hotel restaurant with their heads held high, ready to cement their new fortune. Beatrice was looking for Clara. She was looking for the girl she had beaten into submission.
She didn't find Clara. She found a notice of foreclosure on their own residence, delivered by a process server at the restaurant entrance.
"What is this?" Beatrice shrieked, clutching the papers.
"A gift," a voice said.

Beatrice spun around. Victor stood behind her, flanked by two attorneys. He looked immaculate, towering over the petrified Julian.
"Welcome to the first day of the rest of your lives," Victor said. "I believe you’ll find the lifestyle you’re accustomed to has been... repossessed."
