Chapter 7 - The Master Ledger

I stared at the glowing screen of Ethan's expensive cell phone in absolute awe.
My daughter had executed a brilliant tactical move while actively suffering from severe physical trauma.
"Maya, you are incredibly brave," I said, taking the phone carefully from her trembling hands.
Marcus ushered us quickly into a secure mobile command vehicle parked outside the facility.
I connected Ethan's phone to my forensic auditing software using a secure data cable.
It only took me three minutes to bypass his incredibly weak secondary encryption passwords.
The entire Whitman family empire was laid bare across my computer screen in horrifying detail.
They were not just running a simple embezzlement scheme through a few fake local charities.
The Whitmans were operating a massive, multi-million dollar Ponzi scheme that had defrauded hundreds of elderly investors.
The forged loan on my bakery was just a desperate attempt to cover a massive cash shortfall in their accounts.
"This is completely staggering," Marcus whispered as he reviewed the endless lists of stolen funds.
I dug much deeper into the files, looking for the specific reason they had targeted Maya's pregnancy.
I found a digitized copy of Ethan's late grandfather's original last will and testament.
The legal document contained an ironclad clause regarding the family's primary trust fund.
The trust would only release its fifty million dollar principal if Ethan produced a biological heir.
However, the clause specifically stated that the mother of the child would retain absolute control of the money until the heir turned eighteen.
"They needed Maya to get pregnant to legally unlock the fifty million dollars," I explained to Marcus.
Maya gasped as the horrifying truth finally clicked into place in her mind.
"They caused the miscarriage intentionally because they realized they could never control me," Maya cried softly.
Ethan and Lorraine had poisoned her to kill the baby, planning to use the medical power of attorney to steal the trust anyway.
It was a level of pure, unadulterated evil that I could barely even comprehend.
Marcus immediately began drafting massive federal indictments based on the undeniable trove of digital evidence.
"They are going to federal prison for the rest of their miserable lives," Marcus promised us.
I hugged Maya tightly, feeling the heavy weight of the long nightmare finally lifting from our shoulders.
We were escorted safely back to my house by a detail of armed state troopers for our protection.

I unlocked the front door, looking forward to a long, safe sleep in my own comfortable bed.
But as I stepped into the living room, the strong smell of gasoline completely overwhelmed my senses.
