Chapter 3 - The Audit of Arrogance

Arthur didn't need forty-eight hours. He called me back in twenty-four.
I sat at my kitchen island, a notepad in front of me, as Arthur laid out the brutal truth.
“It’s a house of cards, Judge,” Arthur sighed. “NovaTech isn't expanding. They’re facing a massive liquidity crisis. Marcus took out aggressive short-term loans from unregulated shadow lenders to fund his lifestyle—the cars, the country club, the suits. The business itself is hemorrhaging cash. The three million he wanted you to guarantee wasn't for expansion. It was to pay off a bridge loan that is maturing next week.”
“And Elena?” I asked, my heart turning to stone.
“Worse. Her husband David’s ‘promotions’ are smoke and mirrors. They’ve refinanced their house three times. They are essentially living on credit cards and borrowed equity. When Marcus’s company goes down, he’s taking Elena with him, because she’s listed as a silent partner on the NovaTech LLC.”
They were entirely broke. The expensive wine, the designer clothes, the mocking laughter at my expense—it was all a frantic performance. They had planned to sacrifice my home and my retirement to buy themselves a few more months of fake wealth.
Suddenly, my doorbell rang.
I looked at the security monitor. Marcus and Elena were standing on my front porch. Marcus looked disheveled, his tie undone. Elena was pacing, aggressively chewing her thumbnail.
“Arthur, I have to go. Send me the files. All of them,” I said.
I opened the front door but left the chain locked.
“Mom, let us in,” Marcus demanded, his voice cracking. “You humiliated me in front of Sterling last night! He pulled his term sheet this morning. You cost me a four-million-dollar valuation!”
“I cost you nothing, Marcus. Your fraudulent accounting cost you Mr. Sterling,” I replied smoothly through the crack in the door.
Elena shoved her way in front of her brother. “Mom, you don't understand! The restaurant called the cops last night because Marcus’s cards declined. David had to leave his vintage watch as collateral just to get us out of there! You have to sign the papers today, or we lose everything!”

“Then you will lose everything,” I said, my voice completely devoid of maternal warmth. “You tried to steal my home, Elena. You thought because my hair is gray, my mind is gone. Do not ever come to this house uninvited again.”
I slammed the door in their faces and engaged the deadbolt. The war had officially begun.
