Chapter 1 - The Announcement

The applause died the second my husband announced he was giving sixty-three million shares of our company to the woman carrying his child.

At least, it was the child everyone believed was his.

I sat twenty feet from the stage at the Mercer Dynamics annual gala in downtown Chicago.

Grant Mercer raised a red leather folder above his head like a championship trophy.

Beside him stood his beautiful executive assistant, Vanessa Blake.

She was twenty-seven, beaming brightly, and dressed in a stunning white silk gown.

One hand pressed delicately over a stomach that was not yet showing.

Six hundred employees, investors, suppliers, reporters, and politicians watched her blink back rehearsed tears.

"For extraordinary loyalty," Grant said smoothly into the microphone.

"I am recommending a special equity grant of sixty-three million shares to Vanessa."

Silence immediately fell over the massive ballroom.

It was not a normal, polite silence.

It was a financial-disaster silence.

My family owned exactly thirty percent of Mercer Dynamics.

I personally controlled another twenty percent through shares my father had transferred to me before my marriage.

Grant controlled only twenty-five percent.

There was no legal universe in which he could casually hand Vanessa sixty-three million shares without a shareholder vote, a board resolution, and my signature.

Unless he had forged it.

I placed my champagne glass on the table and stood up.

Grant saw me immediately.

His arrogant smile disappeared for half a second.

Then he quickly recovered his composure.

"Evelyn," he said brightly.

"Come join us."

He actually thought I was going to save him from this disaster.

I walked up the steps and onto the stage.

Vanessa smiled nervously as I approached her.

Grant extended the microphone toward me.

I took it firmly from his hand.

"Vanessa," I said, my voice echoing clearly through the speakers.

"Are you accepting the sixty-three million shares?"

Grant leaned in close and whispered into my ear.

"Don't do this."

I ignored him completely.

Vanessa glanced at him for permission to speak.

He gave her a very slight nod.

She lifted her chin defiantly.

"I am honored to accept."

I smiled at her.

"Wonderful."

Grant's rigid shoulders visibly relaxed.

Then I turned away from them and faced the audience.

"Effective midnight tonight, the Whitmore family will begin withdrawing all financing from Mercer Dynamics."

Someone in the front row dropped a glass, the shattering sound echoing loudly.

I continued speaking into the microphone.

"Our manufacturing credit facilities, raw-material guarantees, logistics agreements, and supplier financing are backed exclusively by Whitmore Capital."

"Without those agreements, Mercer Dynamics will face an immediate liquidity crisis."

Grant aggressively grabbed my arm.

"Evelyn, stop talking."

I violently pulled my arm free from his grip.

"Furthermore, my attorneys will challenge the legality of the sixty-three-million-share grant."

"No shareholder meeting occurred, no board authorization was provided to me, and I never signed any dilution agreement."

Vanessa's perfect face turned completely white.

"So," I said, looking directly at her wide eyes.

"You may want to wait before celebrating."

"Those sixty-three million shares might soon be worth less than the leather folder you are holding."

The ballroom suddenly exploded into absolute chaos.

Reporters jumped to their feet, shouting questions.

Cell phones appeared everywhere as people scrambled to record the meltdown.

Grant ripped the microphone forcefully from my hand.

"She is just emotional," he announced, laughing far too loudly.

"Everyone knows how dramatic family disagreements can become."

I looked at the man I had defended for fifteen long years.

I leaned toward his microphone one last time.

"You have until nine tomorrow morning to explain where those shares came from."

Then I walked proudly off the stage and headed for the exit.

My phone suddenly buzzed in my hand with a text from an unknown number.

May you like

I looked down at the bright screen.

The chilling message read: "I know exactly what you are hiding, Evelyn, and so does your daughter."
