Chapter 7 - The Arrest

At 2:00 PM, Julian walked into the prestigious downtown branch of First Sterling Bank. We knew this because Evelyn had the bank’s security feed patched directly into a secure laptop in my hospital room. Agent Reynolds stood behind us, watching the screen intently.
Julian looked arrogant again. He handed a folder to the branch manager, leaning on the mahogany desk with the casual confidence of a man who thought he had outsmarted the world.
“He’s presenting the forged Power of Attorney,” Reynolds narrated, pressing his earpiece. “My agents are positioned in the lobby.”
We watched the manager review the document. The manager nodded, typed into his computer, and hit enter.
Julian smiled, checking his expensive stolen watch. He thought the money was gone. He thought he was free.
Suddenly, the glass doors of the bank swung open. Six federal agents in tactical windbreakers flooded the lobby. Julian turned around, his smile freezing as two agents grabbed his arms and slammed him face-first onto the marble counter.
“Julian Vance!” an agent shouted, snapping heavy steel cuffs onto his wrists. “You are under arrest for forgery, felony embezzlement, and international wire fraud!”

Through the silent security feed, we watched Julian scream, his face contorted in panic and terror. The polished, untouchable heir was dragged out of the bank in front of dozens of high-society clients, humiliated, broken, and ruined.
In my hospital bed, the corner of my paralyzed mouth twitched upward. It was the first time I had smiled in a month.
