Chapter 1 - The Hidden Phone

I stared at the glowing screen in my hands, unable to process the horrifying reality of the text message.
The words blurred as a sickening wave of betrayal washed over my entire body.
"Leave the kids with Tessa and come now."
This was not a simple mistake or a frantic trip to the grocery store.
My wife, Chloe, had intentionally abandoned our nine-year-old daughter with a heavy, crying infant.
She had left them completely defenseless just to meet a mysterious contact saved only as R.
I looked down at Tessa, whose small hands were still shaking from the physical toll of holding her baby brother.
I pulled her close, kissing the top of her head while Miles finally fell asleep against my chest.
"You are incredibly brave, Tessa, and you did the absolute right thing by calling me," I whispered.
"Is Mom going to be mad that I found the buzzing phone?" she asked with wide, terrified eyes.
Before I could answer, the heavy wooden front door clicked and slowly swung open.
Chloe walked into the house carrying a single plastic shopping bag from a local pharmacy.
She smiled brightly, acting as if she had only stepped outside for a few seconds.
"Hey honey, you are home early from the training field!" she said with perfect, terrifying innocence.
I stood up slowly, keeping the burner phone hidden behind my back.
"Where were you, Chloe?" I asked, fighting to keep my voice dangerously calm.
She brushed a strand of blonde hair behind her ear and let out an exaggerated sigh.
"I just ran down the street to grab some teething gel for Miles because he would not stop crying," she lied without missing a beat.
I raised my left hand, revealing the glowing burner phone to her.
The color instantly drained from her face, leaving her looking like a ghost.
I expected her to cry, to beg for forgiveness, or to desperately try to explain herself.
She did not apologize, and she did not shed a single tear.
Instead, her expression hardened into something cold and unrecognizable.
She looked past me toward the open front door and crossed her arms over her chest.
"I told you he was going to be a problem, Richard," she said into the empty hallway.

A massive silhouette stepped through the doorway, blocking the only exit.
It was my business partner, Richard, holding a suppressed pistol aimed directly at my chest.
