Chapter 10 - The Light at the End

The hospital room was bright, filled with the cheerful sunlight of a beautiful Sunday morning.

It had been three weeks since the fire, and the scent of smoke was finally gone from my memory.

I sat in a comfortable chair beside the hospital bed, watching Drew expertly construct a massive Lego spaceship.

His leg was healing beautifully in a bright blue cast covered in signatures from his favorite nurses.

Lily was sitting on my lap, happily munching on a graham cracker, perfectly content and unafraid.

Reena had been denied bail and was currently sitting in a maximum-security federal prison awaiting trial for murder, kidnapping, and fraud.

Greg, the man in the walls, had survived the fire but was immediately arrested and turned state's witness against Reena to save himself.

The multi-million dollar trust fund was completely frozen, secured away safely for the children's future.

Most importantly, the judge had officially granted me full, permanent custody of my niece and nephew.

We were finally a family, safe and entirely free from the shadows of my brother's past.

The kids had weekly therapy sessions, and while the trauma would take time to fade, their smiles were returning brighter every day.

"Uncle Calder, look!" Drew beamed, holding up his finished Lego creation proudly.

"It looks ready for a long journey, buddy," I smiled, ruffling his hair affectionately.

I felt a profound sense of peace wash over me as I watched them play, knowing I had kept my promise to protect them.

We were going to move out of the city, buy a quiet house by a lake, and start over completely fresh.

The nightmare was well and truly finished.

I was tucking Drew into his new, warm bed that evening when my cell phone buzzed loudly on the nightstand.

I glanced at the glowing screen and felt all the blood instantly drain from my face.

It was a text message from my dead brother Aaron's old phone number.

The message simply read: "Thank you for keeping them safe until I could get back."
