Chapter 1 - The Standoff

"This is my house too," Ryan said, his voice dropping into a chillingly calm register.
The man standing before me was a complete stranger.
His jaw was set tight, and the warm, patient eyes I had fallen in love with were now flat and lifeless.
I pushed Lily further behind my legs, shielding her small body from his gaze.
"Stay on the line, Mom," I said into my phone, my voice trembling despite my best efforts to sound strong.
"What is going on over there?" my mother yelled through the speaker, her panic rising.
"Just listen," I told her, my eyes locked on my husband.
Ryan took a slow, deliberate step forward.
"You are scaring our daughter," he said, emphasizing the word 'our' in a way that made my stomach turn.
"She is not your daughter," I spat back.
"I am the only father she has left," he replied smoothly.
The audacity of his words sent a jolt of pure adrenaline through my veins.
He was trying to gaslight me right in front of the child he had been terrorizing.
"Did you take the lock off the door?" I asked again, demanding a confession.
"I told you, it was sticking," he sighed, acting as if I were a nagging wife complaining about trivial chores.
"Every time Mommy worked late," Lily's tiny voice echoed from behind me, giving me the strength I needed.
I didn't need to hear another word.
"Call the police, Mom," I yelled into the phone.
Ryan's calm demeanor shattered instantly.
He lunged across the hallway with terrifying speed.
Before I could pull away, his large hand clamped down on my wrist, squeezing hard enough to grind my bones.
He snatched the phone from my grip and threw it against the wall.
The device exploded into pieces, cutting off my mother's voice and my only lifeline.
Lily screamed, a raw, piercing sound that broke my heart.
"Now look what you made me do," Ryan whispered, leaning in close so I could smell the peppermint gum on his breath.
I didn't think; I just reacted.
I brought my knee up hard, catching him squarely in the groin.
He grunted in pain and stumbled backward, releasing his grip on my wrist.
"Run, Lily!" I screamed, grabbing her hand.
We sprinted toward the front door, my bare feet slipping on the hardwood floor.
I grabbed the doorknob, twisted it, and threw the door open to the chilly night.
We burst out onto the porch, gasping for air as we rushed toward my parked car.
I reached into my cardigan pocket for my keys, thanking God I always kept them there.
My fingers brushed against empty fabric.
Panic seized my chest as I dug deeper, finding nothing but lint.
A slow, rhythmic clapping came from the porch behind us.
I turned around slowly, shielding Lily behind me once more.
Ryan was leaning against the doorframe, a dark smile playing on his lips.

He raised his hand, letting the streetlight catch the metallic gleam of my car keys dangling from his fingers.
"Going somewhere?" he asked, stepping out into the dark.
