Chapter 10 - The False Victory

Chaos erupted in the confined space of the underground bunker.
Elias dove beneath the heavy desk, pulling a shotgun from a hidden compartment.
Emily didn't hesitate.
She spun around and fired three suppressed shots with terrifying precision.
Vanessa’s lead mercenaries dropped to the floor before they even realized what hit them.
I grabbed Lily, pulling her behind the reinforced steel medical table.
Vanessa screamed in panic and tried to retreat up the stairs, but Emily shot her in the shoulder.
Vanessa collapsed, weeping in agony on the stone steps.
Elias laid down covering fire, forcing the rest of the mercenaries to retreat into the tunnel.
Emily rapidly typed on the keyboard, completing her data transfer to the cartel server.
With the data secure, she tossed a tear gas grenade into the hallway to block the reinforcements.
She turned to me and said the FBI had just received an anonymous tip with our location.
The sirens of federal agents were already echoing through the broken church floorboards above us.
Emily knelt down, kissed Lily on the forehead, and told her to be a good girl.
Then, without looking at me again, Emily slipped through a secondary escape tunnel in the back wall.
Minutes later, heavily armed FBI agents swarmed the bunker.
They arrested the bleeding Vanessa, secured my brother Mark, and called for paramedics.
I sat on the bumper of an ambulance wrapped in a shock blanket, holding Lily tightly.
I watched as Margaret was dragged out of a police cruiser in handcuffs, screaming obscenities as her empire crumbled.
I had survived the night, my abusive family was going to federal prison, and my daughter was entirely safe.
An older FBI lead agent walked over to me with a grim expression on his face.
He told me I was a hero for bringing down Margaret's operation, but he needed me to look at something.
He handed me a classified, red-stamped federal dossier.
Inside was a high-resolution surveillance photo of my wife sitting at a table with three heavily armed men.
The agent leaned in close and whispered that the woman I married is a high-ranking lieutenant for the Sinaloa Cartel.

He pointed to the flashing lights surrounding the hospital block.
The agent said the people outside weren't local police; they were cartel hitmen disguised as cops, and they had just surrounded the ambulance.
