Chapter 1 - The Broken Melody

The silence in the therapy room felt heavy enough to suffocate us.

Vincent Moretti slowly reached out and took the white swan music box from his daughter's trembling hands.

Dominic stepped forward, his perfectly tailored suit jacket falling open to reveal the dark steel of a holstered weapon.

"Vincent, don't do this," Dominic warned, his voice losing its usual smooth polish.

Vincent ignored him and placed his thumb on the delicate brass latch.

Isabella squeezed her eyes shut and covered her ears.

With a soft click, the false bottom of the antique box popped open.

Inside rested a tiny, silver USB drive wrapped in a blood-stained piece of silk.

It was a piece of Sofia's dress from the night she died.

Dominic did not hesitate for another second.

He drew his weapon and aimed it directly at Vincent's chest.

"I am so sorry, my friend," Dominic whispered.

Before he could pull the trigger, Vincent's lead bodyguard tackled him from the side.

The gunshot shattered the large window instead of hitting the mafia boss.

Chaos erupted in the room as the six medical specialists screamed and scrambled for the door.

Vincent grabbed Isabella, sheltering her tiny body beneath his own.

I didn't think, I only reacted on pure maternal instinct.

I scooped up Ellie, snatching the silver USB drive from the floor where it had fallen.

Two of Vincent's own men suddenly drew their guns and shot the loyal bodyguard in the back.

Dominic had bought off half the security detail.

"Kill the maid and get that drive!" Dominic roared, pointing a bloody finger at me.

I bolted through the shattered glass doors leading to the garden.

The Chicago wind hit my face as I sprinted across the manicured lawn with my daughter in my arms.

Bullets tore through the rose bushes right behind my heels.

I ducked behind the heavy stone fountain, gasping for air as Ellie cried softly against my neck.

Heavy footsteps crunched on the gravel, closing in on our hiding spot.

I looked down at the silver drive in my palm, realizing it was a death sentence.

A dark shadow fell over us, blocking out the afternoon sun.

I looked up to see Dominic's top enforcer aiming a suppressed pistol directly at Ellie's head.
