Chapter 8 - The Descent

Dominic watched in stunned silence as the little girl inspected the underside of the heavy steel locking mechanism.
Ellie had always been fascinated by hidden gears, latches, and anything that clicked together perfectly.
Her tiny fingers traced the seam of the metal plate, searching for a mechanical flaw she instinctively knew existed.
Dominic knew the door had a manual override, but it required a specialized magnetic key that was currently upstairs.
The heavy footsteps of the approaching mercenary squad grew louder, echoing terrifyingly through the rows of wine racks.
Dominic grabbed his pistol and stepped in front of the steel door, preparing to make his final, bloody stand.
He told Clare to get behind the thickest oak barrel and to cover her daughter's eyes when the shooting started.
Clare refused to move, her eyes wide with shock as she watched her daughter manipulate the steel panel.
Ellie found a tiny, almost invisible metal pin hidden flush against the bottom of the lock housing.
She pressed her small thumb against it with all her might, treating it exactly like one of her complex toys.
A loud, mechanical click echoed from inside the heavy door, followed by the grinding sound of heavy gears turning.
The massive steel deadbolts slid backward with a tremendous thud, disengaging entirely from the reinforced concrete frame.
Ellie looked up at Dominic with a shy, proud smile and proudly announced that she fixed the shiny part.
Dominic could not believe his eyes, realizing the child had just manually bypassed a million-dollar security system.
He grabbed the heavy handle and yanked the massive steel door open, ushering everyone quickly inside the bunker.
He dragged Vincent's limp body across the threshold just as the first flashlight beam cut through the dark cellar.
The mercenaries spotted them and instantly opened fire, their bullets sparking wildly against the thick steel door.
Dominic slammed the door shut and aggressively threw the heavy internal locking levers, sealing them inside securely.
The sound of the gunfire was instantly muffled, reduced to faint, rhythmic thuds against the impenetrable steel barrier.
The panic room was brilliantly lit by independent emergency lights and stocked with medical supplies and communications gear.
Dominic carefully laid Vincent onto a clean medical cot and immediately began applying pressure to his bleeding shoulder.
He instructed Clare to open the emergency first-aid kit and hand him the combat bandages and hemostatic powder.
Clare moved with surprising efficiency, her hands steady now that she knew her daughter was completely safe.
They worked together frantically to stabilize Vincent, successfully stopping the massive blood loss from his gunshot wound.
Vincent groaned loudly in pain but finally opened his eyes, offering a weak nod of gratitude to Clare.
Dominic stood up and walked over to the secure communication terminal located on the far wall of the bunker.
He picked up the red emergency phone and dialed a secure, direct line to the city's police commissioner.
He coldly informed the commissioner that heavily armed terrorists had breached his estate and demanded an immediate SWAT response.
He hung up the phone and turned back to look at the exhausted mother and her brilliant little girl.
Suddenly, a massive, deafening explosion rocked the entire bunker, shaking dust free from the reinforced concrete ceiling.
The mercenaries had detonated the main structural charges upstairs, bringing the entire massive mansion crashing down upon the cellar.

The heavy steel door buckled inward slightly under the immense weight of the collapsing tons of stone and steel.
A terrifying, metallic groaning sound echoed through the bunker as the ventilation system violently sparked and died.
