Chapter 2 - The Gilded Cage

Lyra awoke to the smell of lavender and crisp linen. She bolted upright, her heart hammering against her ribs. Gone were the damp brick walls and the biting wind of the city's underbelly. She was in a room larger than the entire shelter she had lived in, surrounded by velvet drapes and mahogany furniture.
She swung her legs over the side of the massive canopy bed. She had been scrubbed clean, her bruised skin treated with stinging ointments, and dressed in a silk nightgown that felt like water against her skin.
The door clicked open. Eleanor stood in the threshold, her face a mask of perfectly contoured ice.
"You are a complication," Eleanor said coldly, stepping into the room and locking the door behind her. "A ghost that was supposed to stay dead."
"Where is my watch?" Lyra demanded, backing away until she hit the edge of the bed. She had learned early on the streets that fear was a weakness, but this woman radiated a suffocating danger.
"Destroyed," Eleanor lied smoothly. "Just like your presence here will be if you don't do exactly as I say. You will stay in this wing. You will not speak to the staff. And you will absolutely not speak to Seraphina."
"Why do we look exactly the same?" Lyra shot back, her emerald eyes blazing. "Who are you?"
May you like
Eleanor stepped closer, her perfectly painted red lips curling into a sneer. "I am the woman who owns this city. And you are an unfortunate biological anomaly. A distant cousin from a degenerate branch of the family tree. Do not mistake my temporary charity for weakness, street rat."
Eleanor turned and left, leaving Lyra alone in the suffocating silence of the gilded cage. But Lyra wasn't just a survivor; she was a fighter. She noticed the slight gap in the heavy oak door where the lock hadn't fully engaged.
