Chapter 3 - The Bleeding Receptionist

I drove my car recklessly through the busy Boston streets, my hands trembling violently against the steering wheel.

The image of Vanessa holding my husband's blue silk tie was burned permanently into my terrified mind.

I pulled into the quiet, affluent neighborhood where Nathan and I had shared a home for eight years.

Our beautiful colonial house sat silently at the end of the cul-de-sac, looking exactly as peaceful as it always did.

I unlocked the heavy front door and stepped inside, immediately sensing that something was horribly wrong.

The expensive Persian rug in the foyer was crumpled, and a heavy brass vase lay shattered on the hardwood floor.

Someone had ruthlessly ransacked our perfect home while I was trapped in the hospital with the police.

Cushions were slashed open, bookshelves were completely emptied, and framed photographs were smashed to pieces.

I carefully navigated through the destruction, gripping my purse tightly against my rapidly beating heart.

I walked into Nathan's private study and found his massive oak desk flipped entirely upside down.

The hidden floor safe beneath his reading chair had been blown open with some kind of professional explosive.

It was completely empty, stripped of whatever secrets my husband had been hiding from me all these years.

I dumped the contents of my purse onto the kitchen island, desperately examining the passports Nathan had given me.

There were two distinct passports, each containing a massive sum of hidden emergency cash between the pages.

One passport bore Nathan's photograph with a completely fake name and Canadian citizenship.

The other passport featured a picture of me, labeling me as a woman named Sarah Jenkins from Toronto.

He had been secretly planning our sudden disappearance for months without ever breathing a word of it to me.

Suddenly, a loud, desperate pounding echoed violently against the heavy oak wood of my front door.

I froze in sheer terror, wondering if the police had followed me or if the intruders had returned to finish the job.

I crept slowly toward the entryway, holding a heavy kitchen knife defensively in my shaking right hand.

I peered cautiously through the glass peephole, fully expecting to see a team of armed tactical officers.

Instead, I saw Emily Warren, the young hospital receptionist who had smiled at me just hours ago.

She was leaning heavily against the doorframe, her crisp hospital uniform absolutely soaked in dark, fresh blood.

I quickly unlocked the deadbolt and pulled the door open, catching her as she collapsed forward into my arms.

"They found out that I told you about Vanessa," Emily gasped, her face draining of all living color.

I dragged her inside and pressed a clean towel aggressively against the terrible stab wound in her side.

"Who did this to you, Emily?" I pleaded, dialing the emergency services number on my cell phone.

She weakly reached up and grabbed my wrist, forcing me to drop the phone onto the bloody floorboards.

"Do not call the police, Clara, because the police are the ones who did this to me," she whispered fiercely.

She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small, bloodstained silver key.

"Vanessa is not just a woman having an affair; she is a professional cleaner for the hospital board," Emily confessed.

I stared at the young woman in complete shock as she fought for every single agonizing breath.

"Your husband didn't kill that patient, but he hired Vanessa to cover up the fact that he harvested her organs," Emily said as her eyes rolled back into her head.
