Chapter 10 - The False Sunrise

I drove the heavy transport truck through the dark, abandoned back roads of Illinois.
I could barely see over the massive steering wheel, but sheer adrenaline kept me focused.
I managed to lose the corporate helicopters by hiding under a concrete overpass for an hour.
The coordinates Ethan had secretly loaded onto the silver key guided me toward a remote, heavily wooded area.
As the sun began to rise, I pulled the truck up to a beautiful, hidden cabin surrounded by tall pine trees.
It looked exactly like the safehouse Ethan had promised in his message.
I carried the exhausted, sleeping babies inside and locked the heavy steel doors behind me.
The cabin was fully stocked with food, warm blankets, and a secure communication terminal.
I placed the twins gently onto a soft bed, feeling a massive wave of relief wash over my tired body.
I had survived the most terrifying night of my life, and I had protected my siblings.
I walked over to the secure computer terminal in the living room and plugged in Ethan's silver key.
I was ready to transfer his protective funds and finally shut down Arthur's corporate empire for good.
The screen illuminated brightly, demanding a voice authorization to proceed.
Before I could speak, a calm, chilling voice echoed from the dark corner of the living room.
"Voice print accepted," the voice said smoothly.
The lights in the cabin suddenly clicked on, blinding me for a second.
Sitting comfortably in a leather armchair was Arthur Miller, sipping a cup of coffee.
And standing right next to him, aiming a suppressed pistol directly at my head, was a woman with cold green eyes.
"You did an excellent job bringing the assets directly to us, Harper," she said with a cruel smile.
I stared at her in absolute, paralyzing horror.
May you like
It wasn't Evelyn.
It was my real mother, and she had been working with Arthur the entire time.
