Chapter 4 - The Paranoia

The terrifying warning written on the napkin made Ren's blood run completely cold.

She shoved the fabric deep into her evening clutch, terrified that Damon would notice her sudden panic.

When they returned to Windmir House the next morning, the silence of the mansion felt entirely different.

It no longer felt peaceful; it felt like a trap waiting to snap shut.

Ren began quietly searching the massive house while Damon was locked inside his home office.

The empty picture frames in the dining room suddenly made horrific, twisted sense.

He had erased all visual evidence of the woman who came before her.

She found the housekeeper, Ruth, polishing silver in the butler's pantry.

"Ruth, what really happened to the woman Damon was engaged to before me?" Ren asked desperately.

Ruth dropped her polishing cloth, her weathered face draining of all color.

"You should not ask questions about the ghosts in this house, child," Ruth whispered fearfully.

"If you value your life, you will pack your bags and leave before the anniversary of the fire next week."

Ren backed out of the pantry, her mind racing with sheer terror and confusion.

She turned the corner and bumped violently into a solid, muscular chest.

Damon looked down at her, his eyes dark and completely unreadable.

"Snooping around my home is a dangerous game, Ren," he murmured, backing her slowly against the wall.

"Did you kill her?" Ren blurted out, unable to hold the terrifying question back any longer.

Damon slammed his hand against the wall right beside her head, trapping her completely.

"I've wanted you for months," he confessed fiercely, his voice vibrating with raw, unfiltered emotion.

"I hired you because I couldn't stop watching you at your old restaurant, and I needed you close to me."

May you like

He leaned in until his lips were hovering just a millimeter away from hers.

"I didn't kill my fiancée, Ren, Silas did, and now he is hunting you just to completely break my heart again."
