Chapter 9 - The Fall Of The Queen

The library erupted into total chaos.

I did not waste a single second watching the men fight.

I scrambled off the floor and sprinted straight toward Victoria.

She was frantically trying to press the button on her remote to give the kill order upstairs.

I tackled her around the waist, sending us both crashing into the fireplace mantle.

The remote control flew from her hand and skittered across the floor.

Victoria shrieked and clawed at my face with her sharp nails.

I grabbed a heavy brass candlestick from the mantle and swung it hard.

It connected directly with the side of her head, and she collapsed instantly to the floor, completely unconscious.

I scrambled across the room and smashed the remote control under the heel of my shoe.

Across the room, the brutal fight between Julian and Marcus was ending.

Julian, despite months of muscle atrophy, was fighting like a cornered lion.

He managed to disarm Marcus, tossing the gun away.

With one final, powerful blow to the jaw, Julian knocked the massive security guard out cold.

Julian stood over him, panting heavily, his legs trembling but supporting his weight.

He looked at me across the destroyed room, his gray eyes fully awake and completely aware.

"Sarah," he breathed, taking a shaky step toward me.

Before he could reach me, the wailing sound of police sirens filled the estate grounds.

I had secretly texted my old neighbor from the city two hours ago, begging him to call the police if he didn't hear from me.

Officers swarmed the library, drawing their weapons and demanding we freeze.

"There is a child upstairs!" I screamed, pointing toward the ceiling.

"A man is holding him hostage!"

A tactical team rushed up the stairs while medics rushed in to check on Emma and me.

Ten agonizing minutes later, a police officer carried Brandon safely down the stairs.

The masked man had surrendered the moment the police breached the door.

I fell to my knees, wrapping both of my arms tightly around my crying son.

Julian walked over slowly and knelt beside us, wrapping his arms around the three of us.

"It is over," Julian whispered against my hair.

"You are safe now."

The police handcuffed Victoria and Marcus, dragging them out to the squad cars.

The nightmare we had endured was finally coming to an end.

But as the paramedics checked Julian's vitals, the lead detective approached us with a grim expression on his face.
