Chapter 4 - The Weakest Link

Sabrina was sitting in the corner booth of an upscale espresso bar, hiding behind oversized designer sunglasses. She looked nervous, her manicured nails tapping frantically against her porcelain cup. She wasn't built for murder. She was built for luxury. And luxury was slipping through her fingers.

I slid into the booth across from her. She jumped, nearly spilling her latte.

“You have no right to talk to me,” Sabrina stammered, looking around for an escape route. “My lawyer said I don't have to speak to you.”

“I’m not here as a cop, Sabrina. I’m here as the sister of the woman your boyfriend murdered.” I leaned over the table, keeping my voice low and dangerous. “Victor is going down. The financial records are locked. The toxicology report from Elise’s exhumation just came back. They found trace amounts of heavy metals in her blood. And in the baby’s.”

Sabrina turned the color of chalk. “I didn't know about that. I swear. I thought he just wanted a divorce.”

“Stop lying to yourself,” I snapped. “He didn't want a divorce because a divorce would cut him out of the trust fund. You knew he was desperate. I checked your phone records, Sabrina. You were texting him the night of the crash. You asked if 'it was done.'”

Tears welled up behind her sunglasses. “He told me he was just going to scare her! To make her leave him!”

“He cut her brake lines on a mountain road, Sabrina. That’s not a scare tactic.” I pulled out a small audio recorder and set it on the table. “Victor’s attorney is preparing to throw you under the bus. They’re drafting a narrative right now that you were an obsessed stalker who tampered with the car in a fit of jealousy. He’s going to use you to save himself.”

She stared at the recorder, trembling.

“You have one chance to not spend the rest of your life in a federal penitentiary,” I said softly. “Tell me everything.”
