Chapter 5 - The Burning Illusion

The shockwave of the explosion shattered the windshield of the police cruiser.
Sheriff Miller slammed on the brakes, sending the car spinning wildly across the wet asphalt.
We crashed violently into the steel guardrail, deploying the airbags in a cloud of white dust.
I coughed through the thick smoke, my ears ringing with a high-pitched whine.
I kicked the damaged rear door open with both feet and tumbled out onto the road.
The blazing wreckage of a vehicle was lighting up the dark highway like daylight.
My heart completely stopped as I stared at the towering flames.
"Mom!" I screamed, staggering toward the inferno despite the intense heat pushing me back.
Sheriff Miller crawled out of his wrecked car, bleeding heavily from his forehead.
He didn't try to stop me as I desperately searched the burning debris for any sign of my family.
But as I got closer to the twisted metal frame, a strange detail caught my trained eye.
The burning vehicle was a rusty pickup truck, not a black luxury SUV.
It had been parked on the shoulder and intentionally detonated as a horrific diversion.
Daniel and Vanessa were smart enough to cover their tracks with theatrical violence.
Suddenly, the distinctive roar of a tactical helicopter echoed through the smoky night sky.
Bright searchlights cut through the darkness, illuminating the entire highway.
Three armored state police vehicles screeched to a halt, completely boxing in the corrupt sheriff.
Heavily armed state troopers poured out, aiming their rifles directly at Miller.
"Drop your weapon and get on the ground!" the lead tactical commander ordered over a bullhorn.
Sheriff Miller dropped his service pistol and fell to his knees in terror.
A tall woman in a dark suit stepped out of the command vehicle and walked briskly toward me.
It was Agent Sarah Jenkins, my most trusted lead investigator from the capital.
She pulled out a small key and quickly unlocked my heavy handcuffs.
"Your distress signal woke up the governor, Claire," she said grimly.
"We have a warrant, a judge on standby, and absolute jurisdiction over this entire county."
I rubbed my raw wrists, adrenaline completely masking the pain in my battered body.
"My brother faked this explosion to buy time," I explained rapidly, pointing at the burning truck.
"He has my mother sedated in a black SUV, and they are heading for an airstrip."
Sarah pulled out a high-tech tablet and tapped the screen furiously.
"We already ran his plates through the statewide camera network," she said, pulling up a digital map.
"He is not heading for an airport at all."
I stared at the blinking red dot on the digital map in absolute horror.

They were driving straight into the treacherous, abandoned Appalachian mountain pass.
And the current weather radar showed a massive, catastrophic flash flood warning for that exact valley.
