Chapter 6 - The Wedding Day

Saturday arrived with a violent thunderstorm.
The sky over Port Mercy was completely black.
Emma stood in front of a mirror in Adrian's private estate.
She was not wearing the ivory lace gown she had chosen for Cole.
She was wearing a sleek, tailored white silk suit.
It was not a dress for a blushing bride.
It was armor for a warrior.
Today, she was marrying Adrian Marston.
There were no bridesmaids, no flowers, and no family members.
There was only a heavily guarded library and a terrified city magistrate waiting downstairs.
Adrian walked into the room.
He looked immaculate in a dark charcoal suit.
He stopped behind her, looking at their reflection in the mirror.
"Are you ready to cross the point of no return?" he asked quietly.
Emma met his eyes in the glass.
"I crossed that point three days ago," she answered.
Adrian offered his arm.
They walked down the grand staircase together.
The magistrate was shaking as he read the brief civil ceremony vows.
"Do you, Adrian, take Emma?" the magistrate squeaked.
"I do," Adrian said without hesitation.
"Do you, Emma, take Adrian?"
Emma took a deep breath.
"I do."
Before the magistrate could pronounce them husband and wife, the massive oak doors of the library burst open.
Thunder crashed outside.
Cole stood in the doorway, completely soaked in rain.
He looked disheveled, exhausted, and bruised.
Four of Adrian's armed security guards immediately leveled their weapons at him.
"Hold your fire," Adrian commanded lazily.
Cole stumbled into the room.
Emma expected him to scream, to protest, to beg her to come back.
Instead, Cole fell to his knees on the Persian rug.
He looked up at Emma with tears streaming down his face.
"Please," Cole sobbed pitifully.
He clasped his hands together in begging position.
"Please marry him, Emma."
Emma stared at her ex-fiancé in utter shock.
"What are you talking about, Cole?" she asked.
May you like
Cole wiped the blood from his split lip.
"If you don't marry him right now," Cole whimpered, "Adrian told his men to execute me in the parking lot."
