Chapter 10 - The False Victory

Claire stood perfectly still under the flashing lights of the police cruisers.

She gave her statement to the detectives with a calm that terrified her.

She handed over David’s phone and the manila envelope.

The evidence was undeniable.

By sunrise, the Boston police had raided Whitmore Industries.

Claire watched the morning news on the penthouse television with a cup of black coffee in her hand.

The anchor announced that Nathaniel Whitmore had been arrested for massive corporate fraud and money laundering.

Evelyn Rothwell had been cleared of all syndicate charges and was cooperating with the FBI.

The marriage contract Nathaniel forced upon Claire was declared legally void due to coercion and fraud.

Claire had won.

She had outsmarted a billionaire and secured absolute freedom for herself and her daughter.

The nightmare was finally over.

She walked into the bedroom and kissed Maya’s forehead.

“We are going home, sweetie.”

Claire packed their bags, feeling lighter than she had in months.

Before leaving, she stopped by Nathaniel’s private office at the estate to collect her final paycheck.

The police had already cleared the room, leaving the door unlocked.

Claire walked behind his massive desk and pulled open the bottom drawer to grab her old employment file.

Her hand brushed against a false bottom in the wood.

She pressed it, and a hidden compartment popped open.

Inside lay the real $200,000 sapphire bracelet.

But that wasn't what made Claire stop breathing.

Sitting next to the bracelet was a signed hospital transfer document.

It was the deed to the children’s hospital where Maya had received her life-saving treatments last year.

The hospital had been quietly purchased by Whitmore Industries.

Attached to the deed was a medical file detailing Maya’s bloodwork, dated six months before Claire ever started working for Nathaniel.

At the bottom of the page, in red ink, was a note in Nathaniel’s handwriting.

"The child's blood type is a perfect match. Proceed with the housekeeper's hiring."
