Chapter 10 - The False Victory

The FBI regional headquarters in Chicago was heavily fortified and fully staffed.
When an unauthorized corporate helicopter suddenly began descending into their secure courtyard, the alarms triggered instantly.
Claire and Marcus watched the live feed from her laptop on the roof.
Dozens of heavily armed tactical agents flooded the courtyard, aiming floodlights and weapons at the descending chopper.
Ethan’s pilot, realizing the autopilot was locked and completely hijacked, raised his hands in the window.
The helicopter touched down aggressively on the pavement.
Agents swarmed the cabin, ripping the doors open.
They dragged a screaming, crying Ethan out onto the concrete and slammed him into handcuffs.
The tactical team searched the cabin and immediately recovered the small tin of mints containing the master hardware key.
“They got him,” Marcus said, letting out a massive breath of relief.
“The loyal agents at the bureau have Ethan in custody, and they have the hardware key.”
Claire smiled, leaning against the cold concrete wall.
The empire had finally collapsed.
Ethan was ruined, facing decades in federal prison for money laundering and fraud.
Director Vance was bleeding on the roof, waiting to be arrested by his own uncorrupted agents.
Vanessa was bleeding out in the penthouse, abandoned by her cartel family.
Claire had survived the night, and she still owned the patents to her brilliant software.
“It’s over,” Claire whispered, closing her laptop.
Marcus turned to her, his expression softening into a genuine, warm smile.
“You did incredible tonight, Claire.”
“I’ll call my team to come pick us up.”
He reached into his jacket and pulled out his encrypted satellite phone.
He dialed a number and waited for the connection.
Claire looked up at the stars, feeling the weight of the last ten years completely lift off her shoulders.
Marcus’s phone buzzed softly with an incoming text message.
He looked down at the screen.
The color instantly drained from his face, leaving him completely pale.
He slowly lowered the phone, his warm smile vanishing into a mask of absolute, terrifying coldness.
He reached down and unholstered his handgun.
He pointed the barrel directly at Claire’s chest.
“I am so sorry, Claire,” Marcus whispered, his voice trembling slightly.
“But the FBI pays a government salary, and the cartel just offered me fifty million dollars to finish the job.”
Claire froze, staring down the barrel of the gun as her false victory shattered into a million pieces.
Before Marcus could pull the trigger, the heavy steel door to the roof slowly creaked open.
A woman walked out of the shadows, wearing a pristine white trench coat and a serene smile.
Claire stopped breathing entirely.
The woman walking toward them was Claire’s mother, who had supposedly died of cancer five years ago.

“Put the gun down, Marcus,” her dead mother said calmly.
“My daughter and I have a lot to discuss about the family business.”
