Chapter 9 - The Final Betrayal

Dominic froze completely as the cold steel of a gun barrel pressed against the back of his head.

He slowly raised his hands in the pouring rain.

The man holding the weapon stepped out from the shadows of the crushed container.

It was Police Commissioner Davis, a man heavily funded by the Caruso family for years.

"You made a terrible mess tonight, Dominic," Davis sneered.

Julian saw what was happening and immediately raised his stolen gun.

"Drop it, Julian, or I blow his brains out," Davis warned, cocking the hammer.

Julian hesitated, his hands shaking slightly in anger.

"Why are you doing this, Davis?" Dominic asked calmly.

"Because the people who really run this city don't want a war," the Commissioner explained.

"With Carlo dead, you would own everything, and they simply cannot allow that."

"Who is 'they'?" Dominic demanded.

"The men who pay much better than you ever did," Davis laughed.

The Commissioner ordered Julian to slide his gun across the wet pavement.

Julian looked at Dominic, silently asking for permission.

Dominic gave a tiny shake of his head.

He knew that the moment they were disarmed, the corrupt cop would slaughter them all.

"I said drop the gun!" Davis yelled, pressing the barrel harder into Dominic's skull.

Suddenly, baby Grace let out a loud, piercing shriek from Hannah's arms.

The sudden noise caused Commissioner Davis to flinch just a fraction of an inch.

That was all the opening Dominic needed.

Dominic spun violently on his heel, slapping the gun barrel away from his head.

The weapon discharged, firing a bullet blindly into the rainy sky.

Dominic grabbed Davis by the wrist and twisted fiercely, snapping the bone with a sickening crunch.

The Commissioner screamed and dropped the weapon onto the concrete.

Before Davis could recover, Julian stepped forward and delivered a brutal punch to the man's jaw.

Davis collapsed onto the wet ground, completely unconscious.

Dominic stood over the fallen traitor, wiping the rain and blood from his face.

"Tie him up," Dominic ordered Vincent, who had just limped over from the crane.

"We are going to have a very long conversation with him later."

Julian wrapped his arm around Dominic's shoulder, pulling him into a tight embrace.

"You saved us, Dom," Julian whispered gratefully.

Dominic hugged his younger brother back, feeling the reality of his survival finally sink in.

"You came home," Dominic replied softly.

They gathered their family and loaded them into the armored SUV.

The flashing blue and red lights of approaching police sirens echoed in the distance.

They didn't have much time before the real authorities arrived to clean up the massacre.

Dominic took the wheel, steering the heavy vehicle away from the docks and into the safety of the night.

For the first time in eighteen months, the Caruso family was truly whole again.

But as they drove back toward the estate, Dominic couldn't shake the Commissioner's final words.

Someone far more powerful than the Morettis was watching them.
