Chapter 8 - The Poisoned Truth

Julian collapsed onto the floor, completely exhausted and bleeding heavily from multiple wounds.

Emily dropped the gun and rushed to his side, tears streaming freely down her face.

"You saved my life," Julian whispered, staring up at her with raw, unfiltered awe.

"We have to get out of here right now," Emily sobbed, helping him to his feet.

They quickly retrieved Lily from the ventilation shaft, the little girl crying softly in relief.

Julian led them down a hidden servant staircase that descended deep beneath the mansion.

"Where are we going?" Emily asked as they hurried through the damp, dark tunnels.

"There is a secondary safehouse hidden in the woods two miles away," Julian explained.

He leaned heavily against the stone wall, his strength rapidly failing from the massive blood loss.

"Emily, before we get there, you need to know the entire truth about your sister," Julian gasped.

Emily stopped walking, her heart completely freezing in her chest.

"Sarah didn't die of a sudden illness like the public reports said," Julian confessed softly.

"The Volkovs poisoned her because they thought she had the ledger your father stole."

Emily felt the entire underground tunnel violently spin around her.

"My father stole the ledger to protect our family from the Syndicate," she cried.

"And they slaughtered him for it," Julian agreed heavily, his eyes filled with profound sorrow.

He reached out and gently pulled Emily into his chest, holding her tightly.

"I swear on my life, I will destroy every single person who hurt your family," he promised fiercely.

Emily buried her face in his ruined suit, finally allowing herself to completely trust him.

Suddenly, bright tactical flashlights illuminated the dark tunnel ahead of them.

"Drop your weapons and put your hands in the air!" a loud voice commanded.

Ten men wearing standard police uniforms marched aggressively toward them with assault rifles raised.

Julian completely relaxed, letting out a massive, heavy sigh of relief.

"Thank God, the local authorities finally arrived," Julian said, lowering his hands.

Emily looked closely at the officer leading the heavily armed group.

The man had a massive, recognizable black eagle tattooed prominently on his neck.

It was the exact same tattoo the bleeding Volkov assassin had earlier that night.
