Chapter 2 - The Silence of the Ward

For the next twenty-four hours, the hospital room became a sanctuary of horrific truths.

My father had mobilized his personal detail the moment the hospital called his emergency contact number. He had been on a transport plane halfway across the country, but he had ordered the pilot to turn around immediately.

While I lay unconscious, fighting for my life, my father had been keeping a meticulously detailed log of events.

“The hospital tried to reach Derek seven times,” my father stated, his voice a low, dangerous rumble. He was pacing the length of my ICU room, his hands clasped behind his back. “The police tried his cell phone twice. We sent an officer to his father’s retirement party to pull him out.”

I stared at the ceiling, my heart turning into a cold, heavy stone. “And?”

My father stopped pacing. He pulled out a tablet and placed it on my lap.

“He instructed the venue security to turn the officer away. Claimed it was a ‘prank’ by a disgruntled ex-employee. Then, he turned his phone off.”

I looked down at the tablet. It was open to Derek’s social media pages. While I was bleeding out on the operating table, while our newborn daughter was being hooked up to oxygen tubes in a glass box, Derek was uploading photos.

There was a picture of him holding a massive crystal tumbler of scotch, laughing with his father. The caption read: Celebrating the legend tonight. Some things are just too important to miss.

Another video showed Derek on the dance floor, his tie loosened, a smug, arrogant grin on his face as he toasted the crowd.

Bile rose in my throat.

I had spent three years of my life shrinking myself to fit into Derek’s world. I had endured his family’s passive-aggressive insults, his constant need to be prioritized, his blatant disregard for my boundaries. I had convinced myself that he was just "stressed," that he was "focused on his career."

But seeing those photos—seeing the sheer, unadulterated selfishness of the man I had married—something inside of me finally snapped. The love I had held onto shattered, leaving behind nothing but a profound, chilling clarity.

“He almost killed us,” I said, my voice dead and emotionless.

“He committed felony criminal endangerment,” my father corrected, his tone razor-sharp. “He left a medically vulnerable woman in a state of mortal peril. In the eyes of the law, his negligence constitutes attempted manslaughter.”

I looked up at my father. I had always kept my family’s power hidden from Derek. Derek came from "new money"—a family of loud, flashy real estate developers who thought they owned the world because they drove imported cars. Derek always mocked my father, calling him a "government pensioner" who wasted his life in uniform. He had absolutely no idea what it meant to hold four stars. He had no idea what kind of Leviathan he had just awoken.

“Dad,” I said, looking him dead in the eye. “I don't want him anywhere near my daughter. I don't want him in my house. I want him gone.”

General Vance nodded slowly. A dark, terrifying smirk played at the corner of his mouth.

“Your house is registered under your name, purchased with the trust your grandmother left you,” my father noted. “As of this morning, I have had my JAG lawyers file emergency protective orders, full custody petitions, and criminal complaints with the District Attorney.”

He leaned over the bed, his eyes burning with a righteous, fatherly fury.

“Derek has been enjoying his little party for the last two days, entirely off the grid,” my father whispered. “He is scheduled to return to your property tomorrow morning. When he arrives, he will not find a wife to bully. He will find the United States military.”
