Chapter 9 - The Trial and Verdict

The trial was the media event of the year.

For two weeks, the prosecution dismantled Jessica’s life. They played David’s video diary. They showed the smart-home logs. They brought in Dr. Rostova, who testified that Lily was less than twelve hours away from total organ failure when she was found.

But the most devastating moment of the trial was Lily’s testimony.

She took the stand in a modest floral dress, looking directly at the jury. She didn't cry. She didn't shake. She recounted the days in the locked basement, the desperate search for her insulin and inhalers, and the slow, agonizing realization that her stepmother was going to let her die.

Jessica’s public defender tried to cross-examine her, but Lily’s composure was unbreakable.

When it was time for closing arguments, the prosecutor simply held up the photo of Jessica’s Instagram post—the margarita, the yacht, the caption ‘Finally prioritizing my own peace’—and contrasted it with the horrifying photo of Lily on the ventilator.

The jury deliberated for less than three hours.

When the foreperson read the verdict, the tension in the room snapped.

“On the charge of attempted murder in the first degree... Guilty. On the charge of felony child abuse... Guilty. On the charge of wire fraud... Guilty.”

Jessica let out a shrill, hysterical wail, sinking to her knees in the courtroom. The judge didn't even blink. He sentenced her to forty-five years in a maximum-security federal penitentiary without the possibility of early parole.

She would be nearly eighty years old before she ever saw the outside of a cell again.
