Chapter 9 - The Siege of the Estate

The armored SUV crashed violently through the heavy iron gates of Sarah's hidden compound.
My mother's men poured out of their vehicles, engaging Sarah's private security in a massive, deafening firefight.
I kept my head down, shielding Maya on the floorboards while bullets shattered the bulletproof glass.
Evelyn stepped out into the chaos, firing a suppressed pistol with terrifying, practiced precision.
She yelled for me to grab the child and follow her into the main mansion.
I had absolutely no choice but to obey, dragging Maya through the smoke and raining glass.
We breached the massive oak doors of the estate, stepping into a lavish, blood-stained foyer.
Evelyn systematically cleared the rooms, eliminating anyone who stood in our path without a single hesitation.
We finally reached the grand master suite at the end of the sweeping marble staircase.
Evelyn kicked the door open, revealing Sarah sitting calmly behind a massive mahogany desk.
My dead wife looked exactly as beautiful as the day I married her, holding a crystal glass of wine.
She didn't look scared or surprised by the violent invasion of her home.
Sarah smiled at my mother and slowly clapped her hands in mock applause.
She congratulated Evelyn on a brilliant tactical assault, but said it was entirely too late.
Sarah pressed a button on her desk, and massive steel blast doors immediately slammed shut over the windows and exits.
We were completely locked inside the master suite with no possible way out.
Sarah pulled a heavy silver revolver from her desk drawer and aimed it directly at my chest.
She calmly explained that she had rigged the entire mansion with high-grade military explosives.
She was fully prepared to blow the entire estate to ash just to finally eliminate Evelyn and me.
I begged Sarah to look at her own daughter cowering in the corner.
Sarah glanced at Maya for a fraction of a second, her expression completely empty of any emotion.
She told me that children were simply replaceable assets, and pulled back the hammer of the gun.
May you like
Before she could pull the trigger, Maya suddenly stood up and reached into her worn backpack.
My ten-year-old daughter pulled out the suppressed pistol she had secretly taken from Detective Miller's body at the motel.
