Chapter 9 - The House of Cards

Loretta Grant, Todd's mother, was sitting in the passenger seat of the town car, looking equally thrilled.

The two older women walked up the driveway, laughing and chatting about their brilliant financial maneuvering.

They stopped dead in their tracks when they saw the flashing red and blue police lights illuminating the neighborhood.

Vanessa's mother dropped the expensive bottle of champagne onto the concrete driveway, where it shattered instantly.

"What is the meaning of this?" her mother demanded, marching up to the yellow police tape.

Detective Miller stepped forward, pulling out his badge with a look of immense satisfaction.

"Are you the individual who initiated a fraudulent bridge loan against this property?" the detective asked.

Vanessa's mother scoffed, crossing her arms defensively.

"I am the property manager, I have full legal authority to manage my daughter's assets."

Vanessa stepped out onto the porch, looking down at the woman who had betrayed her so deeply.

"You don't have authority over anything, Mom," Vanessa said coldly.

"Todd and Frank just tried to burn the house down with Melissa inside to collect the insurance money."

Her mother's face went completely pale, her eyes darting frantically toward the squad cars where Frank was sitting in handcuffs.

Loretta let out a loud gasp and clutched her chest, attempting to fake a medical emergency to avoid arrest.

An officer simply handed Loretta a bottle of water and read her the Miranda rights.

"You are both under arrest for bank fraud, criminal conspiracy, and forgery," Detective Miller announced loudly.

Vanessa watched without a single shred of pity as her own mother was handcuffed and placed into the back of a police cruiser.

Her mother cried and begged for Vanessa to tell them it was a mistake, but Vanessa turned her back and walked inside.

She found David, her attorney, standing in the kitchen taking notes on a legal pad.

"The FBI agent just called," David reported with a wide smile.

"They raided Michael's bank office ten minutes ago and secured all the forged documents."

Vanessa let out a long, shuddering breath, feeling the crushing weight of the last two days finally lift from her shoulders.

"The fraudulent deed is officially void, Vanessa, the house is completely yours again."

"What about the damages?" Vanessa asked, gesturing to the demolished kitchen.

David chuckled, pointing to a clause in the homeowner's insurance policy he had printed out.

"Because this was an act of criminal vandalism committed by unauthorized individuals, your insurance will cover a complete, luxury renovation."

Vanessa smiled for the first time since returning from her business trip.

She had lost a deeply toxic family, but she had saved her sister's life and protected her hard-earned sanctuary.

The nightmare was finally over.

At least, that is what she thought as she walked down into the basement one last time to retrieve the hidden vault.
