Chapter 9 - The Bitter Truth

The living room was completely chaotic as the heavily armored tactical officers aggressively pinned the surviving mercenaries face-down onto the hardwood floor.
The local sheriff immediately holstered his weapon and rushed to assist the tactical team with securing the scarred man in heavy iron handcuffs.
I dropped the bloody tire iron and slid across the floor on my knees, reverting instantly to my fourteen years of intensive emergency medical training.
I pushed my hysterical father aside and aggressively applied direct, massive pressure to the severe gunshot wound in Keaton's upper shoulder.
I barked strict medical orders to a nearby tactical officer, demanding he bring me the advanced trauma kit from his armored vehicle immediately.
Keaton was extremely pale and struggling to breathe, but I managed to successfully pack the deep wound and stabilize his rapid blood loss before the paramedics arrived.
The paramedics rushed into the ruined house with a heavy stretcher, quickly loading my brother and rushing him out to the waiting ambulance.
My mother tried to follow the stretcher, but a stern female police officer physically blocked her path and firmly placed her in metal handcuffs.
My father and Aunt Liora were also handcuffed and aggressively marched out the front door to join the remaining fraudulent guests in the back of police cruisers.
The scarred man was dragged out of the house by two massive tactical officers, violently cursing my name and swearing he would return for his revenge.
I stood completely alone in the center of my devastated, bullet-ridden living room, entirely covered in my brother's blood and utterly exhausted.
The sheriff walked over to me, placed a comforting hand on my shaking shoulder, and sincerely thanked me for saving his life with my smart-home distraction.
He assured me that the criminal syndicate would be locked away in federal prison for decades, and my family would face severe felony charges for their massive fraud.
I walked outside into the bright morning sunlight, needing a single moment of fresh air to process the absolute destruction of my entire family dynamic.
My mother was standing near the door of a police cruiser, glaring at me with a look of pure, unadulterated hatred burning in her eyes.
She completely ignored the fact that I had just heroically saved her precious son from bleeding to death on my floor.
She spat aggressively onto the gravel driveway and screamed that she was incredibly glad the loan sharks were going to take my house away.
I looked at her with total emotional detachment and calmly stated that they were never getting my house, and she was going to rot in a concrete jail cell.
My mother let out a vicious, bitter laugh that sounded entirely devoid of any human soul or maternal affection.
She screamed that I was never truly a part of their real family anyway, and they only kept me around to extract whatever money they could steal.

I froze completely, staring at her angry face as the sheriff quickly shoved her into the back of the cruiser and slammed the heavy door shut.
She pressed her face against the reinforced glass window and mouthed the words that would haunt me forever: "You were stolen."
