Chapter 4 - The Arrest Warrant

The stadium lights suddenly felt like police spotlights zeroing in on my exact location.
"Patricia, you know I didn't forge anything!" I shouted into the phone, ignoring the stares of the passing crowd.
"I know that, Leo, but David is a very wealthy man with very expensive lawyers," she replied urgently.
"They are trying to rattle you, to force you into making a mistake."
"If you get arrested at that stadium, it will be on the front page of every local paper tomorrow."
"It will destroy Mason's focus, and it will give David the perfect excuse to take custody."
"You need to leave the premises right now," she commanded.
"I am not leaving my son alone with that monster!" I fired back.
"If you stay, you go to jail, and David takes him anyway," Patricia reasoned coldly.
I looked back through the chain-link fence toward the sidelines.
The first half was coming to an end, and the referee blew the whistle for halftime.
The players began jogging toward the locker room tunnel.
David walked right alongside Mason, his arm draped easily over the teenager's shoulders.
I had to warn Mason before it was too late.
I hung up on Patricia and bolted toward the main concourse, weaving through lines of people buying hot dogs and sodas.
I knew the layout of this stadium perfectly.
There was a service corridor behind the concession stands that led directly to the locker room access doors.
I slipped past a "Do Not Enter" sign and sprinted down the dim, concrete hallway.
The sound of my boots echoed loudly in the narrow space.
Just as I reached the heavy metal doors of the locker room, two large men in dark suits stepped out of the shadows.
They weren't stadium security.
They had earpieces and the unmistakable posture of private muscle.
"Mr. Carter," the larger one said, holding out a massive hand to stop me.
"You need to turn around."
"Get out of my way," I growled, trying to push past him.
The man grabbed my collar, shoved me hard against the cinderblock wall, and pinned my arm behind my back.
Pain shot through my shoulder as my face smashed against the cold stone.
"Mr. David Carter instructed us to keep you away from the boy," the man whispered menacingly in my ear.
"Let me go!" I yelled, struggling against his immense weight.
The locker room door suddenly swung open.
Mason stood in the doorway, holding a water bottle, staring at me pinned against the wall.
"Dad?" Mason asked, his eyes wide with shock.
The guard immediately released me, stepping back and smoothing his own suit as if nothing had happened.
I stumbled forward, catching my breath.
"Mason, you have to listen to me, David is trying to frame me," I pleaded.
Before Mason could answer, David stepped out from behind him, holding up a printed police document.

"Mason, I tried to protect you from this, but your uncle is about to be arrested for fraud," David said with a sorrowful sigh.
"I think it's time you came home with your real family."
