Chapter 2 - The Shadow Ledger

Rachel stared at the threatening email, the blood draining from her face.
Her instincts screamed at her to delete it, to pretend she had never seen it.
But the image of Emma Moretti lying pale and unconscious in the trauma bay anchored her resolve.
She forwarded the email to a secure, private account she rarely used.
Then, she permanently deleted it from her work server.
If someone was watching her inbox, she wouldn't give them the satisfaction of panic.
She spent the rest of the afternoon meticulously reviewing every purchase order associated with Northshore Emergency Systems.
The discrepancies were subtle, expertly hidden within mountains of legitimate paperwork.
But Rachel knew how to spot a pattern.
Over the past six months, St. Catherine’s had procured millions of dollars in equipment from Northshore.
All of it had been routed through Moretti Freight Holdings.
And all of it bore the same slight irregularities in serial sequencing.
It wasn't just a few faulty monitors; it was a massive, systemic infiltration of counterfeit medical supplies.
And someone high up in the hospital administration had to be signing off on the inflated invoices.
She needed to access the restricted financial archives to find the authorization signatures.
That meant bypassing Dennis.
At 6:00 p.m., the office emptied.
Rachel waited until the cleaning crew had passed her floor before slipping into the records room.
The archives were housed on a secure server that required executive clearance.
Rachel didn't have clearance, but she knew Dennis kept his passwords written on a sticky note under his keyboard.
It was a reckless move, but desperation made her bold.
She logged in under his credentials and searched for the Northshore contracts.
The files loaded slowly, revealing a labyrinth of shell companies and offshore accounts.
Finally, she found the master authorization document.
The signature at the bottom made her breath catch.
It wasn't Dennis.
It was Dr. Aris Thorne, the hospital's Chief of Surgery and Emma Moretti's primary physician.
Rachel printed the document, her hands shaking so badly she almost dropped the paper.
She had to show this to Daniel.
She pulled out his black business card and dialed the number.
It went straight to voicemail.
“Mr. Moretti, it’s Rachel Morgan. I found something. It’s worse than we thought.”
She hung up and grabbed her bag, eager to leave the stifling air of the records room.
As she turned toward the door, the lights suddenly snapped off.
The heavy steel door slammed shut, the electronic lock engaging with a final, terrifying click.

A cold voice echoed from the darkness.
“I warned you to stop looking, Ms. Morgan.”
