Chapter 6 - The Ghost in the Hallway

Adrien spun around, leveling his pistol at the dark expanse of the hallway.

The emergency backup lights cast long, ominous shadows against the expensive wallpaper.

The hallway was entirely empty.

Click.

The sound echoed again, sharper this time, bouncing off the high ceilings.

It was coming from the end of the hall, near the entrance to the master suite.

Adrien moved silently down the corridor, his finger resting lightly on the trigger.

His heart pounded a frantic rhythm against his ribs, but his hands were perfectly steady.

He had survived assassination attempts, rival mob wars, and federal investigations.

But hunting a ghost in his own home was unraveling his iron control.

He reached the double doors of the master suite. They were slightly ajar.

He kicked them open and stepped inside, scanning the massive room.

The king-sized bed was perfectly made. The heavy velvet curtains were drawn tight.

Everything was exactly as he had left it that morning.

Except for one detail.

Sitting on the edge of the bed was a small, ornate wooden jewelry box.

It was Claire’s jewelry box.

Adrien approached the bed, keeping his weapon raised.

He recognized the box. It was the one she kept her most prized possessions in, including the vintage gold locket.

The lid of the box was open.

Adrien looked inside.

Resting on the velvet lining was the vintage gold locket.

It was completely pristine. Not melted. Not twisted. Not damaged in any way.

It looked exactly as it had the day he gave it to her.

Adrien stared at the locket, his mind reeling.

He had personally inspected the melted lump of gold retrieved from the fiery car crash. He had held it in his hands.

So how was the perfect, undamaged locket sitting in her jewelry box right now?

He reached out and picked it up. The metal felt cold against his skin.

He pressed the small latch on the side.

The locket sprang open.

Click.

There was the sound. The exact acoustic signature that Elias’s software had detected on the bug.

Inside the locket, where a tiny photograph of their wedding day used to be, there was a small, folded piece of paper.

Adrien carefully unfolded it.

It was a receipt.

A receipt from a private aviation company, dated yesterday.

It showed the charter of a private jet from a small airfield in upstate New York to a remote airstrip in Northern Italy.

The passenger manifest listed five names.

Elena Bellamy.

Sophie Bellamy.

Theo Moretti.

Miles Moretti.

Nora Moretti.

They were already gone. They were halfway across the Atlantic.

And the flight had been paid for in full, using an untraceable offshore account.

Adrien crushed the receipt in his fist, a low growl escaping his throat.

Claire—if it was Claire—had planned this with terrifying precision.

She had used Elena to infiltrate the house, plant the bugs, and exfiltrate the children while he was distracted by the empty grave.

But why Italy?

The Moretti family had roots in Sicily, but Adrien’s power base was entirely in New York. He had no trusted allies in Northern Italy. It was hostile territory, controlled by rival syndicates.

If she took his children there, she was taking them into a war zone.

Adrien turned to leave the room, his mind already formulating a plan to mobilize his entire organization and tear Italy apart until he found them.

As he reached the doorway, his earpiece finally crackled to life.

“Boss? Boss, can you hear me?” It was Marco, sounding frantic.

“I hear you, Marco. Where are you?” Adrien demanded.

“I’m in the security control room, Boss. The jamming signal just dropped.”

“Where were you ten minutes ago when I called you?”

“I was locked in the basement, Boss,” Marco admitted, his voice tight with shame. “Someone drugged the coffee in the guard breakroom. Half the security detail is unconscious.”

Adrien’s jaw tightened. The level of infiltration was staggering.

“Listen to me, Marco,” Adrien said, his voice cold and commanding. “The children have been taken. Elena took them. I need the jet prepped for takeoff immediately. We’re going to Italy.”

“Understood, Boss,” Marco said. “But there’s something else.”

“What?”

“I just got the security feeds back online,” Marco said. “I’m looking at the exterior cameras near the main gate.”

“And?”

“Boss, the gates are open. And there’s a convoy of black SUVs pulling up the driveway.”

Adrien frowned. “My men?”

“No, Boss,” Marco said, panic edging into his voice. “They’re not ours.”

Adrien ran to the window of the master suite and looked down at the sprawling driveway.

Marco was right.

Five heavily armored SUVs were speeding up the winding road toward the main house, their headlights cutting through the driving rain.

They weren't police. They weren't federal agents.

They were moving in tactical formation, preparing to breach the estate.

Whoever had taken his children had just sent an army to make sure he couldn't follow them.
